Lobo women in league soccer final tonight

New Mexico men close regular season on road

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORTS

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The lone obstacle to an NCAA Tournament bid for the third-seeded New Mexico women’s soccer team (13-5-2) is the No. 4-seeded team it will face in tonight’s Mountain West Conference tourney final.

That fourth-seeded team, however, is host San Jose State (8-6-6) — one that beat the Lobos 1-0 in their lone meeting Sept. 30, also in San Jose.

The 8 p.m. match will stream live on Facebook and on the Mountain West Network on Stadium.

It’s the first time since 2004 that neither the No. 1 nor No. 2 seed is in the championship match, not that the appearance by the Lobos — regularseason tri-champions — could be considered a surprise.

UNM is in the finals for the second consecutive season, but is seeking its first tourney title since 2011.

The Lobos’ loss to the Spartans during the regular season was the last time they’ve been held scoreless.

In Canyon, Texas, Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team pulled off the biggest upset in program history on Julia Tucker’s goal in overtime as the Hounds defeated 19th-ranked and top-seeded West Texas A&M 1-0 in the Lone Star Conference semifinals Friday night.

Eastern (9-8-2) is advancing to its first LSC vhampionship match.

With the win, fifth-seeded Eastern New Mexico will face No. 2 seed Angelo State on Sunday at noon for the Lone Star Conference Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament.

MEN’S SOCCER: The Lobos play their season finale tonight at No. 19 Charlotte (11-3-1, 5-2-0). The Lobos (4-10-1, 2-4-1) go into tonight’s match against the 49ers assured that the season — and the program — will live on into next week. UNM has assured itself of no worse than seventh place, and the top seven teams in the nine-team league advance into next week’s league tournament, also in Charlotte beginning Wednesday.

WOMEN’S GOLF: In San Jose, Mexico, the University of New Mexico wrapped up the first round of action at the Battle at the Beach hosted by Baylor on Friday. Sophomore Caroline Jansson led the way for the Lobos in round one as the squad finished the first day in a tie for 14th in the 17-team event.

Jansson posted a score of 3-over 74 in round one of tournament play and is five strokes out of first place.

BASEBALL: The Cherry team scored 12 runs on 13 hits Friday night to cruise past Silver 12-5, and in the process take the intrasquad series, 3-1. The two teams are scheduled to play the fifth and final game of the series today.

VOLLEYBALL: UNM plays a 2 p.m. match today at Mountain West Conference foe Nevada, two days after host San Jose State beat the Lobos 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11).

New Mexico State is at Utah Valley at 1 p.m. today, two days after sweeping host Seattle University.

CROSS COUNTRY: Eastern New Mexico’s Mercy Rotich, who owns school record in the 5-kilometer (17 minutes, 37.70 seconds) and the 6K (20:36.00) leads her team in today’s Lone Star Conference championships in Canyon, Texas.
