Bane rallies No. 20 TCU in second half for victory

FORT WORTH, Texas — Desmond Bane scored 13 of his 14 points after halftime when No. 20 TCU rallied for a 66-61 victory over Cal State Bakersfiel­d on Wednesday night.

Bane’s tiebreakin­g driving layup with 2:48 left finally put TCU ahead to stay. The Horned Frogs had trailed by as many as 11 points before halftime.

TCU played an opener as a ranked team for the first time in 20 seasons, since 199899. That was after the Horned Frogs had gone to the 1998 NCAA Tournament, their last one before making it last March in the second season for coach Jamie Dixon at his alma mater.

Jarkel Joiner had 18 points and Damiyne Durham 11 for Bakersfiel­d. Both had three 3-pointers.

JD Miller had 13 points for TCU, while Alex Robinson had 12 points and nine assists. Yuat Alok had 11 points.

Bane, who also had 10 rebounds, and Alex Robinson each had five points in a 19-6 run in the second half that pushed TCU ahead for the first time since less than seven minutes into the game. COLORADO STATE 100, COLORADO CHRISTIAN 60: Kendle Moore scored 26 points to lead five players in double figures in the Rams’ victory on Wednesday night at CSU.

Anthony Masinton-Bonner added 22 points, while Lorenzo Jenkins scored 15 points.

Nico Carvacho contribute­d 14 points and 15 rebounds. Adam Thistlewoo­d finished with 10 points. In San Jose, Calif. four San Jose State starters, guards Brae Ivey, Zach Chappell and Seneca Knight, and forward Michael Steadman scored in double figures in their major college debuts leading the Spartans to a in a non-conference men’s basketball game.

Ivey, a junior college transfer from Riverside College, led all players in scoring with 18 points.

Knight, a freshman from Lafayette, La., scored 17 and Steadman, a junior college transfer from City College of San Francisco was the leading rebounder with 13 rebounds to go along with 15 points.

Chappell and reserve forward Christian Anigwe each added 10.

San Jose State (1-0), with nine new players on its roster, led the entire game.

Women

No. 17 N.C. STATE 77, BELMONT 62: In Raleigh, N.C., Grace Hunter scored 16 points, Kai Crutchfiel­d added 15 and No. 17 North Carolina State used a big run in the fourth quarter to defeat Belmont in the season-opener for both teams Wednesday night.

The Wolfpack, who have won 16 straight openers, led 55-52 after three quarters and twice swapped baskets with the Bruins before Hunter knocked down a jumper.

No. 20 TEXAS A&M 65, RICE 54: In College Station, Texas Chennedy Carter scored 22 points, Aaliyah Wilson and Kayla Wells combined for 34 and Texas A&M defeated Rice in the season opener for both teams.
