Man shot, killed during domestic violence incident
APD: Call ‘quickly escalated’ to shooting
Police say a man was shot and killed during a domestic violence incident in a Northwest Albuquerque apartment complex Monday morning.
His ex-girlfriend and another man involved in the shooting have both been interviewed and released, and detectives are not searching for any other suspects, said officer Simon Drobik, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department.
Around 7:45 a.m. officers were called to The Aspens apartments on Eagle Ranch near Irving NW.
“One caller reported that the altercation was involving her exboyfriend,” Drobik wrote in an email. “The call quickly escalated as the caller described one subject shooting another subject.”
When officers arrived they found a man dead.
Drobik said he believes the woman had called the other man to help protect her from her ex, but Drobik did not know the relationship between the two.
“It’s in the early stages,” Drobik said, referring to the investigation. “I know this is a domestic violence call as it came in but now we have a homicide call out here.”
He said the ex-girlfriend and the other man were taken to APD headquarters downtown for interviews. Neither had been arrested or charged Monday night.
Drobik did not release the dead man’s name since his next of kin has not yet been located.
Detectives have conducted “numerous interviews” and executed a search warrant on the vehicle and apartment involved in the shooting. Investigators roped off the roadway in front of several apartments throughout the morning. A cluster of belongings and clothing could be seen strewn across a sidewalk.
The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges should be
filed.
This is the third homicide investigation in four days, none of which have resulted in charges.
On Friday night, police say a man was trespassing at Chavez Concrete Contractors on Jefferson near McLeod NE and shot at the business’s owner. The business owner returned fire, killing him.
Drobik said the business owner had been interviewed and released and the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office. He did not release the name of the dead man.
On Saturday, officers called to an apparent suicide in a home in the Foothills found a woman dead from “trauma to her head,” Drobik said.
However, during the autopsy the Office of the Medical Investigator found signs that the woman may have been killed.
Drobik said detectives returned to the home and interviewed everyone who was there when the woman died. They are gathering information and will forward the case to the DA.
The same detectives have been investigating all three cases, making it a busy past couple of days.
“It’s a lot of work today for APD criminalistics and homicide unit,” Drobik said.
