Stepfather of Mahomes’ girlfriend dies after game

- FROM JOURNAL WIRES

The stepfather of Patrick Mahomes’ longtime girlfriend Brittany Matthews suffered a medical emergency at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon and died.

Matthews posted about her loss on social media Sunday night.

“Today is a day I will never forget,” she wrote. “Directly after this picture I sprinted to the front entrance to see my step dad passed out! He did not come back from this and he was called to heaven today! I KNOW 100 percent he is so happy up there with his kids looking down on us cheering loud that his Chiefs won today! Thank you everyone for the prayers and sweet text! We will miss you Paul So So So much! I will take care of mom for you!”

Mahomes, who broke Len Dawson’s 1964 single-season touchdown pass record in the win, wasn’t available for interviews after the game because of the family emergency.

On Monday, coach Andy Reid expressed condolences for the

family, and added that he didn’t expect Mahomes to miss any practice time.

“We’re sorry to hear what took place yesterday,” Reid said. “Our prayers and blessings are with the family. I’ve talked to Patrick. They’re doing well for the circumstance. As they go through this mourning period, our prayers and thoughts are with them.”

NEW YORK JETS: Todd Bowles is staying put as coach of the New York Jets. For now, at least. It was business as usual Monday for Bowles, whose job status appeared extremely shaky after the Jets’ embarrassing 41-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, their fourth consecutive defeat that dropped the team to 3-7.

“We picked a bad day to have a bad day,” Bowles said during a conference call.

Fans at MetLife Stadium booed the team throughout and chanted for the Jets to fire Bowles.

SAINTS: New Orleans coach Sean Payton says the Saints have signed veteran receiver Brandon Marshall.

Marshall’s addition adds depth to an offense that already leads the NFL in scoring with 36.7 points per game and ranks in the top five in yards per game with 413.9.

Last week, the Saints signed receiver Dez Bryant, but he tore his Achilles in only his second practice and never played a game for New Orleans.

The Seattle Seahawks released Marshall on Oct. 30 after he’d appeared in Seattle’s first seven games this season, catching 11 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown.

EAGLES: Philadelphia cornerback Ronald Darby has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

Darby was injured in the second half of Philadelphia’s 27-20 loss to Dallas on Sunday night.

BILLS: Buffalo coach Sean McDermott says rookie quarterback Josh Allen will reclaim the starting job should he be healthy when the team returns from its bye week off.

McDermott made the announcement Monday, a day after journeyman backup Matt Barkley threw two touchdowns in a 41-10 win at the New York Jets.

RAMS: Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp is out for the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

Coach Sean McVay on Monday confirmed the injury for Kupp, who led the Rams in yards receiving last season.

Kupp was hurt on a noncontact play during the Rams’ 36-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. An MRI exam confirmed a torn ligament for Kupp, who already missed two games last month with a different injury to the same knee.

BENGALS: Cincinnati fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Monday, a day after a 51-14 loss to the Saints that ranks among the worst in franchise history.

New Orleans scored on every possession except the last one — when it took a knee while in field-goal range — during its rout at Paul Brown Stadium.

The fading Bengals (5-4) fired a coordinator in midstream for the second season in a row.
