CARRIED AWAY BY FOOD DRIVE
Supply is down this year at Roadrunner
Letter carriers will collect donations of nonperishable food this Saturday.
One of those wonderful annual opportunities to give thanks is here again this Saturday, so put some of those foodstuffs you can do without this holiday into a bag and by your mailbox.
Food collected during the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive not only helps those in need for the Thanksgiving holiday, it helps Roadrunner Food Bank prepare to keep helping them during the winter months.
“It’s been an unusual year. Right now the amount of nonperishable food in our warehouse is lower than what we typically see as we approach the holidays,” said Mag Strittmatter, president and CEO of Roadrunner Food Bank.
“We are asking for the community to open their hearts and donate food items,” she said. “This gift inspires hope for so many of our neighbors in need who are struggling to put food on the table.”
This annual drive, hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, the U.S. Postal Service the Rural Letter Carriers Association, is looking for nonperishable food items. Letter carriers will pick up the donations for Roadrunner Food Bank to distribute through its statewide hunger-relief network.
Post office box customers can bring food directly to their nearest post office, organizers said in a news release.
Types of food items needed include canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice, boxed meals, canned meat items, cereal, etc.

Last year’s drive raised some 175,600 pounds of food.
