Duke rolls in first game after taking over at No. 1

Michigan routs Villanova in 2018 title game rematch

DURHAM, N.C. — Zion Williamson scored 21 points and fellow freshman RJ Barrett added 20 as No. 1 Duke routed Eastern Michigan 84-46 on Wednesday night in its first game this season as the nation’s top-ranked team.

Javin DeLaurier and Jack White added 10 points apiece for the Blue Devils (3-0).

Playing two days after leapfroggi­ng Kansas for the top spot in the AP Top 25, Duke looked every bit the part of a top-ranked team — shooting 47 percent, turning 20 turnovers by the Eagles into 31 points and taking command with an early 21-1 run keyed by an assortment of dunks by Williamson.

Damari Parris had nine points to lead Eastern Michigan (3-1), No. 18 MICHIGAN 73, No. 8 VILLANOVA 46: In Villanova, Pa., Charles Matthews scored 19 points and Ignas Brazdeikis had 18 as Michigan (3-0) beat Villanova in a national championsh­ip game rematch.

Villanova captured its second title in three years with a 79-62 victory over Michigan in April but was completely overmatche­d in the second game at its newly renovated Pavilion.

Eric Paschall scored 10 points and Phil Booth had nine for the Wildcats (2-1). No. 9 AUBURN 103, MISSISSIPP­I COLLEGE 52: In Auburn, Ala., Austin Wiley scored 18 points and Auburn scored 35 consecutiv­e points during a second-half stretch in a victory over Mississipp­i College.

Bryce Brown added 16 points for the Tigers (3-0), who went on a scoring tear of dunks, 3-pointers and fast-break baskets after the Division II Choctaws (1-2) briefly threatened to make it close.

Mississipp­i College cut a 25-point deficit down to 51-40 early in the second half. No. 10 KENTUCKY 96, NORTH DAKOTA 58: In Lexington, Ky., PJ Washington set career highs with 25 points and seven rebounds, Tyler Herro added 18 points and No. 10 Kentucky rolled over North Dakota.

The Wildcats (2-1) finally got the dominant effort they sought after scraping by Southern Illinois last week. They had to survive an initial back-and-forth with the Fighting Hawks (2-1), who led 13-12 before Washington’s 3-pointer put Kentucky ahead to stay. The Wildcats outscored North Dakota 27-7 over 9:46 for a 39-20 cushion and led by 38 in the closing minutes. No. 11 MICH. STATE 80, LA.-MONROE 59: In East Lansing, Mich., Cassius Winston scored 14 of his 23 points in the opening minutes of the second half, bouncing back from a rough start to help Michigan State beat Louisiana-Monroe.

The Spartans (2-1) lost Nick Ward midway through the first half with an injury. Ward went down and pounded the court with both fists. He got up on his own and hobbled off the court, trying to keep weight off his right leg. Ward did not return after scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds in five minutes. No. 19 CLEMSON 74, SAM HOUSTON STATE 59: In Clemson, S.C., Marcquise Reed had a season-high 26 points and Clemson used a second-half surge to put away Sam Houston State. INDIANA 96, No. 24 MARQUETTE 73: In Bloomingto­n, Ind., Romeo Langford scored 22 points and Evan Fitzner added 16 as Indiana locked down on defense to beat Marquette.

WYOMING 86, GRAMBLING 78: In Laramie, Wyo., Hunter Maldonado scored 21 points to lead Wyoming (1-2) past Grambling (1-1). COLORADO STATE 81, MONTANA STATE 77: In Fort Collins, Colo., J.D. Paige had a team-high 23 points as Colorado State (3-0) defeated Montana State (1-3). SAN DIEGO STATE 103, TEXAS SOUTHERN 64: In San Diego, Matt Mitchell had 21 points, one of six SDSU players in double figures, in a rout by the Aztecs (2-0) over Texas Southern (1-3). NM HIGHLANDS 70, WESTERN NM 67: In Silver City, the Cowboys’ Raquan Mitchell hit three free throws in the final 26 seconds to lead Highlands past Western.

Okoro Nnamdi had 19 points to lead NMHU. Willie McCray has 15 for WNMU. Both teams are 2-1. Women

No. 3 OREGON 88, UTAH STATE 58: In Logan, Utah, Ruthy Hebard had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Sabrina Ionescu added 15 points and 10 rebounds as Oregon beat Utah State.

Erin Boley added 14 points for the Ducks and Taylor Chavez chipped in 13 as Oregon (3-0) coasted after shooting 56 percent from the field and finishing with a 36-26 advantage on rebounds. No. 8 OREGON STATE 89, ARKANSASPI­NE BLUFF 33: In Corvallis, Ore., steals led directly to fast breaks and easy buckets for Oregon State, which scored 36 points off 21 turnovers. No. 10 MARYLAND 69, GEORGE WASHINGTON 30: In Washington, Brianna Fraser scored 16 points, Taylor Mikesell added 13 and Kaila Charles had 12 as Maryland beat George Washington. No. 12 TENNESSEE 73, UNC ASHEVILLE 46: In Knoxville, Tenn., Meme Jackson scored 13 points as the Lady Volunteers breezed to a victory over UNC Asheville.

UCLA 80, No. 14 GEORGIA 69: In Los Angeles, Michaela Onyenwere scored 25 points, Kennedy Burke added 21 and UCLA pulled away with a game-ending 18-4 run to upset Georgia. No. 18 SYRACUSE 75, No. 20 TEXAS A&M 65: In White Plains, N.Y., Tiana Mangakahia scored 26 points as Syracuse beat Texas A&M. No. 25 MINNESOTA 78, XAVIER 53: In Cincinnati, Kenisha Bell scored 18 points as Minnesota beat Xavier.
