Virginia downs Dayton, advances

Cavaliers will face No. 25 Wisconsin in Battle 4 Atlantis championsh­ip game

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — Andre Hunter matched his career high with 23 points to help fourth-ranked Virginia hold off Dayton 66-59 on Thursday in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals.

Hunter made a 3-pointer with 53.1 seconds left and Virginia protecting a 60-56 lead. It turned out to provide just enough cushion to keep the Cavaliers (5-0) in control and send them into the championsh­ip game Friday against No. 25 Wisconsin.

Virginia shot 50 percent in the second half.

Ty Jerome added 15 points for Virginia, and Kyle Guy had 14.

Josh Cunningham led Dayton (4-1) with 15 points. The Flyers shot 55 percent in the second half and stayed within reach every time the Cavaliers threatened to stretch the lead into double figures.

Dayton will face Oklahoma on Friday in the third-place game. No. 6 NEVADA 96, TULSA 86: In Las Vegas, Nev., Jordan Caroline had 25 points and 11 rebounds and the Wolf Pack (5-0) beat the Golden Hurricane (4-1) in the third round of the Las Vegas Invitation­al.

Nevada (5-0) will face Massachuse­tts in the championsh­ip game tonight. Massachuse­tts beat Southern Illinois 84-62.

Caleb Martin added 21 points for the Wolf Pack, making all 10 of his free throws. Jazz Johnson had 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.

Sterling Taplin the Golden Hurricane (4-1) with 22 points, and Martins Igbanu added 14.

Nevada finally pulled away with about 10 minutes left in the game, building an 80-62 lead with 9:30 left. Tulsa cut it to 88-79 with 3:48 remaining. TEXAS 92, No. 7 NORTH CAROLINA 89:

In Las Vegas, Nev., Kerwin Roach II had a career-high 32 points with seven assists and six steals to lead Texas over North Carolina in the third round of the Las Vegas Invitation­al.

Roach also had six rebounds and was 12 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 3 from deep.

North Carolina freshman Coby White had 33 points, but he missed a 3-pointer that would have put the Tar Heels (5-1) ahead with 1:01 left. He was 7 of 10 from 3-point range.

Matt Coleman III had 16 points for Texas (5-0), and Jaxson Hayes had 15 points and nine rebounds. No. 19 LSU 67, COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 55: In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Emmitt Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds and LSU beat College of Charleston to reach the AdvoCare Invitation­al semifinals.

Skylar Mays added 12 points for the Tigers (5-0). They will play Friday night against No. 14 Florida State or UAB.

Jarrell Brantley had a season-high 27 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (3-2).

No. 25 WISCONSIN 78, OKAHOMA 48: In Paradise Island, the Bahamas, D’Mitrik Trice’s 3-point shooting display broke a Battle 4 Atlantis tournament record and nearly matched another as the Badgers (5-0) beat the Sooners (4-1) and advanced to today’s title game against No. 4 Virginia.

FRESNO STATE 78, NORTHWESTE­RN 59: In Fullerton, Calif., former New Mexico State Aggie Braxton Huggins’ 17 points led the Bulldogs (2-1) past the Wildcats (3-1) in a Wooden Legacy Game.

Women

No. 1 NOTRE DAME 81, GONZAGA 65: In Vancouver, British Columbia, Arike Ogunbowale scored 21 points and No. 1 Notre Dame (4-0) beat the Bulldogs (4-1) in the first game of the inaugural Vancouver Showcase.

Brianna Turner added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Notre Dame (4-0). The Fighting Irish dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bulldogs 56-32 and finishing with 29 defensive rebounds.

Zykera Rice had 16 points and seven rebounds for Gonzaga (4-1). The Bulldogs scored the first seven points and forced nine first-half turnovers.

Louise Forsyth, a sophomore guard from Langley, British Columbia, made a 3-pointer in 14 minutes of action for Gonzaga.

No. 2 UCONN 90, MISSISSIPP­I 50: In St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Katie Lou Samuelson scored a season-high 22 points and UConn beat Mississipp­i in the Paradise Jam.

The Huskies (3-0) extended their regular-season winning streak to 118 games.

Napheesa Collier added a season-best 18 points and had 10 rebounds, Christyn Williams had 13 points, Megan Walker 12, Olivia Nelson-Ododa 11 and Crystal Dangerfiel­d 10. Shannon Dozier and Crystal Allen had 11 points each for the Rebels (3-2).

No. 11 TENNESSEE 78, CLEMSON 55: In Bimini, Bahamas, Zaay Green scored eight of her 12 points and Cheridene Green six of her 11 in the fourth quarter as the Lady Vols (4-0) pulled away for a victory over Clemson (2-3) in the Junkanoo Jam.

Meme Jackson, who made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points, tied the game with a pair of free throws with six minutes to go and start a 13-0 run that left the Lady Vols (4-0) ahead 71-60 with 2:19 remaining — the first double-digit lead for either team. Two Chyna Cotton free throws cut the lead to nine but Tennessee outscored Clemson 7-4 from there with Zaay Green scoring six.

Rennia Davis added 13 points and Kasiyahna

Kushkituah 11 for the Vols, playing their first game away from home.

Danielle Edwards and Simone Westbrook each scored 19 points and Kobi Thornton 11 for the Tigers (2-3). No. 14 SYRACUSE 70, KANSAS STATE 61: In Cancun, Mexico, Tiana Mangakahia scored 18 points with six assists and four steals and the Orange (4-1) rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Wildcats (3-1) at the Cancun Challenge.

Digna Strautmane added 13 points and Emily Engstler had 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Orange, who won their straight after shooting 52 percent. No. 15 NC STATE 78, MICHIGAN STATE 74: In Cancun, Mexico, Kiara Leslie had 17 points and 12 rebounds to help N.C. State beat Michigan State in the Cancun Challenge.

Grace Hunter added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Aislinn Konig had 16 points and Hunter scored 16 with 11 boards and six assists.

No. 16 DePAUL 82, PRINCETON 67: In Cancun, Mart’e Grays scored 23 points and Chante Stonewall had a double-double as the Blue Demons (2-1) rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat the Tigers (1-4) in the Cancun Challenge.

Trailing most of the game but getting even after three quarters, DePaul (2-1) outscored the Tigers 24-9 in the final quarter that included 3-pointers by Grays, Stoneman, Sonya Morris and Rebekah Dahlman. KENTUCKY 85, No. 17 SOUTH FLORIDA 63: In St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Rhyne Howard scored 18 points, Taylor Murray added a season-best 17 and the Wildcats (5-0) defeated the Bulls (4-1) in the Paradise Jam.

Jaida Roper added a season-high 13 points off the bench, which contribute­d 23 to the win for the Wildcats (5-0).
