Holiday competition features wreaths, ornaments designed with style
From contemporary to traditional, unique wreaths and holiday ornaments will be part of the Women in Design: New Mexico’s Fifth Annual Holiday Design Competition & Auction.
About 35 submissions will be at the event Thursday, Nov. 29, at Las Puertas Event Center. Each can be bid on as part of a silent auction. Winning bidders can pay with cash or credit at the end of the night. Raffles of furniture, jewelry and more will also be part of the activities. Items include the “Say O” lounge chair by Source International and donated by Rodenbeck, as well as earrings with a matching necklace by Oropopo!, inspired by the UFO crash site in Roswell.
“We generally set a minimum bid of $20-$40. I think it’s $20 for ornaments and $40 for wreaths generally,” said Noreen Kramme, chairwoman of Women in Design: New Mexico, of the silent auction. “I think we require that they bid in $5 increments, so it’s not tremendously expensive .”
Proceeds from the auction and raffles will benefit Susan’s Legacy, a local nonprofit that helps women with co-occurring mental illness and addictive disorders. A different nonprofit is selected each year.
There are no rules when it comes to submissions.
“Artists pretty much have free reign in what they design,” said Kramme. “… They have to be hangable, same with the ornaments.”
In the past, Kramme has seen her share of uncommon wreaths and ornament submissions.
“We’ve had a wide range of entries, from the traditional Christmas wreaths made out of evergreen branches and ornaments, but we’ve also gotten wreaths made out of old Barbie dolls or horseshoes,” she said. “We’ve had 3D printed wreaths... Some of them are more crafty, some of them are more designy and we love every single one of them.”
