Country singer Casey Donahew splits time between tour, recording and family

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ

Casey Donahew’s days have been busy. Not only is the country singer getting ready for the next leg of his tour, but also he’s in the studio working on his upcoming album with producer Josh Leo.

“It’s always refreshing to work on new music, and give a shot of adrenaline and get you excited about what’s coming,” he says. “And I survived the session.”

Donahew is based out of Burleson, Texas, and throughout his entire career, he’s done everything the grassroots way.

He’s always on tour and churning out new music every couple of years.

Adding to that, he’s a husband and a

father.

So it’s not uncommon for him to fly back home for some family time.

“The most important thing to me is getting back to see my kids,” he says. “Spending time with them. I’m always flying back and forth to see those guys. Both of them are big time sports fans. The time I’m not with them, it’s spent talking via FaceTime. When I am home, it’s a lot of hunting, fishing and ranching. I’ve definitely burned up some airplane miles.”

Donahew has released six studio albums over the course of his career. His latest album is 2016’s “All Night Party.”

His current single, “That Got the Girl,” is from his upcoming album, which is expected out in early 2019.

“I just think you get better, the longer you do something,” he says. “These new tracks are a great collection of songs. They are powerful and there’s a lot to say in the music. We recorded 21 songs and I’m not sure how it’s going to be released, but all the songs will get out there.”

Donahew says that over the nearly 20 years of writing, his process has been real similar.

“I like to get along and turn on my thoughts,” he says. “I’ve done some co-writes and changed up the sound a little. I stripped some stuff down to see how it connects with people. There’s one sad song that is just me and the piano. It’s not like anything I’ve done before.”

Donahew is looking forward to getting back on the road before deciding which tracks make the album.

He will try out some of them on the road.

“It’s amazing to think that I have a catalog of music that is more than 100 songs deep,” he says. “There’s some flexibility there for me when it comes to making a set list. Yes, I would love to do a set with the 21 new songs, but there has to be a balance.”
