Mary Hunter

-

Mary E. Hunter, 83, went to be with the Lord on November 19, 2018.

Affectionately known as "Meg," Mary was born March 15, 1935, to Ellis and Mary Wright in Alamogordo, NM. After graduating high school, she became a clerk for the Village of Bayard, NM, and she met Ray Hunter at a nearby cafe. They were married after only three weeks of dating, and shared 54 years together until Ray passed in 2007. Ray and Mary raised three sons and formed close bonds with church communities and neighbors in El Paso, TX; Bayard, NM; and Toquepala, Peru. They moved to Las Cruces, NM, in 1973 and to Albuquerque in 2005.

It was in Las Cruces where Mary started a child-care service in her home. Over the next 33 years, she lovingly cared for over 40 children, many of whom introduced their own children to her as "Grandma Mary." Their continued visits, letters, calls, pictures and love meant everything to her and she enjoyed following the events of their lives as they graduated and raised families of their own.

Mary is survived by her sons and their spouses: Roy Hunter and Sharon of Greenville, TX; Kenneth Hunter and Laura Gleasner of Albuquerque, NM; and Walter Hunter and Paula of Bremerton, WA. Her seven grandchildren are Jonathan Hunter; Collier Budick; Kaedi Sanchez; Micah Hunter; Elizabeth Hunter; Joy Hunter; and Charity Hunter. She was also blessed with eight great grandchildren. She is additionally survived by her brother Ralph "Ted" Wright of Silver City, NM, and honorary family, Amanda and Kylie Lopez of Phoenix, AZ.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters AnnaMae Waldie and Viodell Gosnell.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2:00 p.m., at Berean Baptist Church, 3800 Eubank Blvd. Albuquerque, NM. Graveside burial service will be in Fort Bayard National Cemetery on Monday, November 26, 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Berean Baptist Church or to Barrett Foundation, Inc.
