METRO AREA PLAYERS TO WATCH
Cailee Crawford, soph., PG, Highland: A player capable of scoring in the 30s if she has a hot night; she averaged 18.5 last season. Secondteam All-State as a frosh.
Kaya Ingram, 5-7, jr., PG, La Cueva: Missed the end of the 2017-18 season with a major ankle sprain, but she remains quick and is stronger. Was scoring 18 a game before the injury.
Viane Cumber, 5-10, soph., SG, Sandia: At last, Cumber makes her Sandia debut (Tuesday against Eldorado) after missing all of her muchanticipated freshman season with an injury.
Maiah Rivas, 5-6, sr., SG/PG, West Mesa: She has signed with New Mexico Highlands, and is one of Class 5A’s most potent scoring threats from the arc. First-team All-State last season. Adamari Waddell, 5-11, jr., FW/P, Cibola: She will miss the start of the season after labrum surgery, but is arguably the best returnee for the Cougars. Hayley Valencia, 5-10, soph., FW, Hope
Christian: She led the Huskies in five categories, including scoring and rebounding, as a freshman. Coming off hand injury. Can play any position. Maya Trujillo, 5-7, sr., SG, St. Pius: A steady, reliable player who led the Sartans in scoring last year, and has been second-team All-State the last two seasons. Espi Varoz, 5-6, sr., SG/PG, West Mesa: Combined with Rivas, these two make for an electrifying backcourt for the Mustangs. Contributes in so many ways. Laura Gutierrez, 5-7, sr., PG/SG, Rio Rancho: Gutierrez (Texas A&M International) is going to need to be a major scorer and floor leader for the Rams if they are to make another Final Four appearance. Sapirah Broussard, 5-3, sr., PG, Sandia: Missed her junior season with a knee injury, but is poised to come back and shred opposing defenses with her athleticism and savvy.
