MEN: NEW MEXICO AT NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico Lobos (4-1, 0-0 Mountain West) Coach: Paul Weir (51-22, third season overall; 23-16, second season at UNM)
What you need to know about the Lobos: The win Saturday at Bradley was, by far, the best the Lobos press has looked all season. It wasn’t just a token press with a defender standing in front of an opposing player to make it look like pressure, it was actual pressure that made the Braves play uncomfortably and often got the ball into the hands of players not used to bringing the ball up court. NMSU, meanwhile, has veteran guards who have handled UNM’s press well in all three games since Paul Weir has coached UNM and Chris Jans has coached NMSU. Carlton Bragg has traveled with the Lobos to Las Cruces but remains ineligible. While the NCAA is considering UNM’s appeal of his ineligibility, he’s allowed to travel in case the decision is reversed.
New Mexico State Aggies (6-1, 0-0 WAC) Coach: Chris Jans (55-19, third season overall, 34-7, second season at NMSU)
What you need to know about the Aggies: Eli Chuha, the senior big man who had seven points and seven rebounds in the first meeting this year (and has 37 points and 37 rebounds in his career vs. UNM), is still “day to day” with a back injury, Chris Jans said Monday. It is unclear if he’ll play, but even if he does, Jans said, Chuha hasn’t practiced in a week and could be rusty. The Aggies continue to be one of the best ball-control teams in the country, ranking No. 15 (of 535) in turnover rate, turning the ball over on just 14.1 percent of possessions in their games vs. Division I opponents.
