A national day of mourning has been declared for today to honor the life of the 41st president of the United States, George H.W. Bush, who died Nov. 30 in Houston at age 94.

Before serving as president from 1989 to 1993, Bush was vice president under Ronald Reagan. He was also a U.S. congressman from Texas, ambassador to the United Nations, chairman of the Republican National Committee, head of the U.S. Liaison Office in China, director of the Central Intelligence Agency and a decorated World War II Navy pilot who flew 58 missions in the Pacific.

All federal offices will be closed except those that are related to “national security, defense or other essential public business,” according to a memorandum issued by the United States Office of Personnel Management.

The U.S. Postal Service announced on its website that all retail locations will be closed and delivery services will be suspended for the day, with the exception of some package deliveries.

Social Security field offices and hearing offices will be closed, according to a note on the Social Security Administration’s website.

The U.S. District Court for New Mexico will be closed, but some court cases that have already begun will continue.

The New York Stock Exchange, as well as the NASDAQ, will also be closed.

The offices of New Mexico’s congressional delegation will remain open, including their offices in Washington, D.C. The lone exception will be the Las Cruces office of outgoing Congressman Steve Pearce.

All City of Albuquerque and State of New Mexico government offices will be open and operating as usual.
