THIS IS ONE SWEET CABBAGE
Artesia resident will get $1K scholarship
This 30-pound entry was good for first place and a $1,000 savings bond in a statewide cabbage-growing contest.
Artesia third-grader Chloe Aguilar of Yeso Elementary grew a 30-pound cabbage as part of an annual, national cabbage growing contest and has been named the New Mexico winner.
She was one of more than 11,500 students across the state participating in the National Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program. She will receive a $1,000 saving bond toward her education.
Nationwide, more than 1 million third-graders were involved in the handson gardening experience, organizers said in a news release. Each state winner receives a $1,000 scholarship.
Teachers from participating classes select the student who has grown the “best” cabbage, based on size and appearance, and submit a digital image to www.bonnieplants.com. That student’s name is then entered in a statewide drawing. State winners are randomly selected by the agriculture departments in each state.
Bonnie Plants provides starter cabbage plants to third-grade classrooms whose teachers have signed up for the program online at www. bonnieplants.com. The mission of the program, which started in 1996, is to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people and continue to “grow” the next generation of gardeners, organizers said.
