Casa Vieja Brewery hosts ‘Paint and Patina — Fine Art Show’ in Corrales
For the past four years, the “Paint and Patina” show in Corrales has showcased the work of Chris Turri, Cassidy Watt and Michael Copeland.
This year, for its fifth year — organizers invited bronze sculptor Barbara Burzillo and plein air painter Krysteen Waszak to the mix.
“It’s an honor to be participating in this event,” Burzillo says. “Joining in on what the original artists have been able to build is amazing.”
The event begins today and runs through Sunday, Dec. 9, at Casa Vieja Brewery in Corrales.
Casa Vieja Brewery, which recently opened, is showcasing art.
Burzilllo, who is based in Placitas, has been in New Mexico for 23 years.
“One of the things I love about being an artist is the ability to communicate without using words,” she says. “A lot of my inspiration comes from how I feel about the environment. The pieces also stem from gratitude or happiness or even sometimes sadness.”
Burzillo says she works primarily in abstract, figurative bronze sculpture and painting.
“My work often reflects my views about humanity and the future of our planet,” she says. “I revel in dramatic gestures and bright palettes. My figures are frequently elongated, faceless, fantastical beings. It’s often noted that my sculptures and paintings convey a dynamic sense of movement.”
Burzillo says she relies on the medium as an active participant in determining the subject of her art.
“While I sometimes plan, my most successful sculptures and paintings are of organic origins,” she says. “I create art because it is a wonderful way to communicate at the deepest level with those around me.”
Burzillo plans to take about 25 sculptures of various sizes to the art show.
“I did start working on smaller pieces recently,” she says. “For people who want to collect the larger pieces, there will be some. It’s important to have something for everyone.”
The event will also feature local beer and wine. ABQ BBQ will be selling food, and musician Frank Salazar will perform during peak hours.
