Reckless Kelly marks 10th anniversary of ‘Bulletproof’ with live album
Jay Nazz is taking a break from tour.
It’s much needed, as Nazz is in upstate New York on a hunting trip.
Then before he heads out on tour, he will spend nearly a week in Brussels.
“I purposely picked Brussels because I wanted to look at architecture,” he says in a recent interview. “We’ve had such a busy year that we all needed this break.”
Nazz is a member of the country rock band Reckless Kelly.
The band formed more than 20 years ago and is made up of Willy Braun, Nazz, Cody Braun, David Abeyta and Joe Miller.
The band’s co-founders and frontmen toured the country as part of their father’s band, Muzzie Braun and the Boys, as children.
They performed on “The Tonight Show” twice.
Their father taught his four sons a professional ethic — integrity, persistence, hard work and professionalism — honed over three generations. They overcame hardships, struggled for recognition, and learned the lessons of the trial and error that defined them.
Reckless Kelly has released nine albums, with 2016’s “Sunset Motel” being its most recent.
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the band’s album “Bulletproof.”
“We were able to record some of the shows on this tour,” Nazz says. “Our goal was to put songs from the album into the show each night. We landed up with a live album that we’re calling ‘Bulletproof Live.’ It’s been incredible, because we’ve been trying to do as much as we can in-house with this album.”
With that album to be released soon, the members are also gearing up for recording a studio album.
Nazz says Willy Braun is back home writing new material.
“We’ll be going into the studio in February,” he says. “Willy’s been in Idaho writing. It’s takes a while to work on this project. Willy writes about 95 percent of the music for us. He’ll also step out and do some co-writes with other musicians. The flow of it all works well for all of us.”
Willy Braun also writes the set lists for each show.
“We are ready to play any song from our catalog,” Nazz says. “It’s always fun to see what Willy has up his sleeve. There’s always a surprise each night.”
