After 54-year-old Robert Clark dropped off his daughter with his ex-wife Sunday evening, police say he opened fire on the vehicle, injuring his ex-wife’s husband.

Clark was booked into the county jail Monday morning. He is charged with shooting at or from a motor vehicle, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, child abuse and other crimes.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, police were called to the Target on Paseo Del Norte near Interstate 25 around 8:30 p.m. Sunday for a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital. It’s unclear what condition he was in Monday.

Through multiple interviews, detectives learned that Clark and his ex-wife had agreed to meet at Target so Clark could drop his 12-yearold daughter off with the girl’s mother and her husband.

When the couple arrived, the girl got out of her father’s vehicle and into her mother’s.

That’s when, police say, Clark told his son, “I just want to talk to your mom’s husband real quick and ask him some questions.”

He got out and started arguing with the couple about child care issues, according to the complaint.

Clark’s ex-wife’s husband, David Doyle, told officers that the parents were having a conversation about custody arrangements.

“During the conversation, Robert exited his vehicle from the driver’s side and David observed Robert holding a black

handgun,” the detective wrote in the complaint. “David immediately attempted to drive away and Robert was shooting at the vehicle through the back windshield. David drove to the entrance of Target and exited the vehicle with (the 12-year-old) and realized he was shot.” Clark fled the scene. Police found him at his southeast Albuquerque home later that night and took him into custody.

When interviewed, Clark told detectives he had the gun for “protection” and was aiming at his ex-wife and her husband when he fired it, according to the complaint.

When the officer asked if he was concerned for his daughter’s safety when he fired the gun, Clark said “yeah, um, did it hit (her)?” according to the complaint. He then stated he was outside his vehicle and “just started shooting.”
