Davie: UNM soon to fill that and offensive coordinator job

Aurmon Satchell, New Mexico’s director of athletic performance the past three seasons, has left the Lobos to work for Louisville’s football team as the associate strength coach.

Satchell informed UNM he was leaving earlier this month, Lobos football coach Bob Davie said Wednesday.

Louisville’s hiring of Satchell is not yet official, and the strength coach is not available for the media, said Rocco Gasparro, the Cardinals’ assistant sports information director — even though Satchell is listed as on staff on the Cardinals’ website.

Calvin Magee, who was the Lobos’ offensive coordinator for the 2018 season, also left UNM earlier this month to become the tight ends coach at Ole Miss. The Rebels made Magee’s hire official on Sunday.

The Lobos are near to filling the vacancies of offensive coordinator and strength coach, Davie said.

The Lobos also had two others from Davie’s staff leave during this offseason. Mitchell Kleinschrodt, the UNM director of recruiting, has become the head coach at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Sam Lundberg, an assistant

operations director for UNM, followed Kleinschrodt to be on his staff at Ellsworth.

At Ole Miss, Magee is reuniting with Rebels’ offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez. Magee was on staff while Rodriguez was the head coach at West Virginia, Michigan and Arizona.

Davie said he wants the Lobos to continue to use the same offensive scheme as last season when Magee installed the spread after six straight seasons of the triple option.

Satchell, who worked specifically with the UNM football team, was hired by the Lobos before the 2016 season after he had worked as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for four seasons at South Carolina.

Satchell spent one year at Indiana in 2011, and before that worked as an assistant at South Carolina for two seasons.

Satchell, a former linebacker and defensive end for Texas, oversaw all aspects of athletic performance for the Lobo football program, which went 3-9, 1-7 in the Mountain West Conference for the second straight year in 2018.
