Top-ranked Vols fall hard at Kentucky

Freshmen lead Duke win over N.C. State

LEXINGTON, Ky. — PJ Washington scored 23 points, Keldon Johnson added 19, and No. 5 Kentucky upset No. 1 Tennessee 86-69 Saturday night to end the Volunteers’ 19-game winning streak.

The Wildcats used a 25-7 surge over a little more than seven minutes for a 62-38 lead, providing a cushion that withstood the Volunteers’ 13-0 spurt soon after that cut the advantage in half. Kentucky maintained a double-digit lead to win the highly anticipate­d matchup of top-five schools.

Kentucky (21-4, 10-2) also avoided a second consecutiv­e SEC loss to stay within reach of co-leader Tennessee (23-2, 11-1), which hadn’t lost since Nov. 23 to then-No. 2 Kansas.

No. 2 DUKE 94, N.C. STATE 78: In Durham, N.C., RJ Barrett had the Duke program’s first tripledoub­le in 13 years, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and a season-high 10 assists, as the Blue Devils (23-2, 11-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) downed North Carolina State (18-8, 6-7).

Fellow freshman Zion Williamson scored 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Tre Jones added 13 to help the Blue Devils win their ninth straight.

No. 3 GONZAGA 79, SAN DIEGO 67: In San Diego, Rui Hachimura scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and had 10 rebounds, and the Bulldogs (25-2, 12-0 West Coast Conference) pulled away in the second half to beat the Toreros (16-11, 5-7) for their 16th straight victory.

No. 4 VIRGINIA 60, NOTRE DAME 54: In Charlottes­ville, Va., Kyle Guy had 22 points, De’Andre Hunter added 20 points, 13 in the second half, and 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers (22-2. 10-2 ACC) held off the Irish (13-12, 3-9). No. 6 MICHIGAN 65, No. 24 MARYLAND 52: In Ann Arbor, Mich., Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift the Wolverines (23-3, 12-3 Big Ten) over the Terrapins (19-7, 10-5).

No. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 95, WAKE FOREST 57: In WinstonSal­em, N.C., Cameron Johnson scored 27 points, and the Tar Heels (2-5, 10-2 ACC) scored the game’s first 18 points en route to their biggest-ever margin of victory in an ACC game in routing the Demon Deacons (0-15, 2-10).

No. 12 PURDUE 76, PENN STATE 74: In West Lafayette, Ind., Carsen Edwards scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and Matt Haarms added a career-high 18 points to lead the Boilermake­rs (18-7, 11-3 Big Ten) past the Nittany Lions (9-16, 2-12).

No. 14 KANSAS 79, WEST VIRGINIA 53: In Lawrence, Kan., Devon Dotson and K.J. Lawson each scored 15 points, and the Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) beat the Mountainee­rs (10--15, 2-10).

Dedric Lawson, K.J.’s brother, had 14 points for the Jayhawks, who won their third straight as they continue to start four freshmen.

No. 15 TEXAS TECH 86, BAYLOR 61: In Lubbock, Texas, Jarrett Culver scored 18 points and Davide Moretti added 17 as the Red Raiders (21-6, 9-4 Big 12) cruised past the Bears (16-9, 7-5).

No. 16 LOUISVILLE 56, CLEMSON 55: In Louisville, Ky., graduate transfer Christen Cunningham scored 18 points, 16 in the second half, as the Cardinals (188, 9-4 ACC) snapped a two-game losing skid in edging the Tigers (15-10, 5-7).

No. 17 FLORIDA STATE 69, GEORGIA TECH 47: In Atlanta, Christ Koumadje had 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Seminoles (20-5, 8-4) tied a school record with their seventh straight ACC win, in rolling past the Yellow Jackets (11-15, 3-10).

No. 19 LSU 83, GEORGIA 79:

In Athens, Ga., Tremont Waters scored 20 points, Ja’vonte Smart added 19 and the Tigers (21-4, 11-1 SEC) won their fourth straight game, holding off the Bulldogs (10-15, 1-11).

No. 21 IOWA 71, RUTGERS 69:

In Piscataway, N.J., Joe Wieskamp banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second to play as the Hawkeyes (20-5, 9-5 Big Ten) beat the Scarlet Knights (12-13, 5-10).

No. 22 VIRGINIA TECH 70, PITTSBURGH 64: In Pittsburgh, Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored a season-high 29 points, Ahmed Hill added 14 and the Hokies (205, 9-4 ACC) held off the slumping Panthers (12-14, 2-11).

No. 23 IOWA STATE 78, No. 18 KANSAS STATE 64: In Manhattan, Kan., Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and the Cyclones (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) pulled away late to beat the Wildcats (19-6, 9-3).

No. 7 NEVADA 82, WYOMING 49: In Laramie, Wyo., Trey Porter scored 14 points, Jordan Caroline and Caleb Martin added 13 apiece, and the Wolf Pack (24-1, 11-1 MWC) crushed the Cowboys (6-10, 2-10) for their 10th straight win.

UTAH STATE 76, AIR FORCE 62: In Colorado Springs, Sam Merrill had 20 points as the Aggies (20-6, 10-3) beat the Falcons (10-15, 5-8).

Utah State faces New Mexico at home Wednesday.

SDSU 71, BOISE STATE 65: In San Diego, Devin Watson scored 19 points, Jalen McDaniels added 18 and teammates Matt Mitchell and Joel Mensah also scored in double figures as the Aztecs (169, 8-4) beat the Broncos (11-15, 6-7).

Justinian Jessop had 19 points for Boise State, which had beaten SDSU by 24 points earlier this season. UNLV 71, SJSU 64: In San Jose, Calif., Joel Ntambwe had 20 points as the Runnin’ Rebels (14-11, 8-5) beat the Spartans (3-21, 0-13).

In Silver City, CJ Vanbeekum scored 17 points and Jon-Reese Woodson had a double-double — 10 points, 11 rebounds — as the Mustangs (5-16, 2-12) Lone Star Conference) edged Cameron (8-17, 4-11).

In Portales, Archaim Lallemand scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Zach Parker had 18 points as the Greyhounds (1211, 9-6 LSC) downed the Rams (16-7, 9-5). UC-COLO. SPRINGS 94, NMHU 83: In Colorado Springs, 33 points from Raquan Mitchell and 23 from Gerad Davis weren’t enough to stop Colorado-Colorado Springs (16--9, 13-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) from downing the Cowboys (169, 11-8).
