Lobos’ 1st win is vs. Minnesota

NMSU baseball scores 62 runs in doublehead­er

SURPRISE, Ariz.— Jared Mang and Tanner Baker went 4-for-5 to pace New Mexico’s 15-hit attack in an 11-1 thumping of No. 24 Minnesota Saturday night at Surprise Stadium in the College Baseball Classic.

The Lobos got their first win of the season, one day after squanderin­g a 5-3 lead and falling 6-5 to defending national champion and No. 8 Oregon State in the tournament opener. UNM returns to play today for a 5 p.m. game against Gonzaga.

Junior right-hander Nathaniel Garley pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on three hits with three walks. He struck out six and at one point retired 10 consecutiv­e Gopher batters.

Freshman right-hander Tristin Lively of Las Cruces took the ball in the ninth and held the Gophers (1-1) scoreless after they loaded the basies with no outs. Lively inducted a foul-out, a popup and full-count strikeout to end the game.

■ In Las Cruces, New Mexico State obviously has bitten off a lot less than it can chew for a season-opening series.

The 3-0 Aggies won a home doublehead­er Saturday over 0-3 Texas Southern by 24-8 and 38-6. The combined game time of the twin bill was eight hours and a minute.

Tristen Carranza went 4-for-6 and drove in five runs in the opener. In the nightcap, Joseph Ortiz drove in six runs for the Aggies, who had 25 hits, drew 14 walks and scored nine times in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The Aggies, who won Friday’s season opener 20-2, go for the sweep today at noon.

SOFTBALL: In Tucson at the Hillenbran­d Invitation­al, New Mexico fell 15-1 in five innings to No. 9 and host Arizona early Saturday. Kiana Spencer allowed seven runs in 1.1 innings and took the loss.

UNM (2-4) played a late game against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday and wraps up action with a 9 a.m. game today vs. South Florida.

■ In Las Cruces at the Troy Cox Invitation­al, Shelby Shultes it a pinch-hit threerun homer in the bottom of the seventh as the Aggies walked off Montana 6-3. Later, the Aggies mustered eight hits but only a run in a 3-1 loss to San Jose State. NMSU (6-2) hosts Bradley today at 11 a.m. to wrap up tourney play.

■ In Portales, Eastern New Mexico (4-7, 0-3 Lone Star) dropped a doublehead­er 13-4, 19-2 to NCAA Division II’s No. 6-ranked Angelo State (13-1, 3-0) on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Field.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: In Las Vegas, Nev., New Mexico State (2-3) fell 4-0 to UNLV (6-2). The Aggies were set to face Colorado State later Saturday, then wrap play today vs. UC Riverside.

TRACK AND FIELD: In Flagstaff on Friday, Jay Griffin IV produced the lone event win on the day among eight Lobo athletes, winning the men’s 200 meters at the appropriat­ely named NAU Tune Up. Griffin’s time of 21.22 seconds was 0.39 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

In the women’s high jump, sophomore Ada’ora Chigbo posted a second-place result with her clearance of 5-9.25.

UNM hosts the Mountain West Conference indoor championsh­ips beginning Thursday at the Albuquerqu­e Convention Center.
