Aggies avert staggering upset with strong 4th period

SEATTLE — New Mexico State trailed for most of the game against one-win Seattle, but scored the first 17 points of the fourth quarter and won 83-72 on Saturday in Western Athletic Conference play.

Brooke Salas had 27 points and 10 rebounds for her 17th double-double as the Aggies (19-6, 11-1) won their 10th straight game. Gia Pack added 25 points to go with eight rebounds, and Stabresa McDaniel added 15 points. That Aggie trio combined for 25 points in the fourth quarter

Seattley (1-23, 1-10) hit eight 3-pointers in the first half and had an 11-point lead with 3:34 to go in the second quarter. The Redhawks still led 60-54 going into the fourth quarter.

The first-place Aggies are off until this coming Saturday, when they play at UT Rio Grande Valley.

No. 1 BAYLOR 87, OKLAHOMA 53: In Waco, Texas, Chloe Jackson scored 24 points through 2½ quarters as the Lady Bears (23-1, 13-0) routed the Sooners (6-18, 2-11).

BYU 66, No. 13 GONZAGA 64: In Spokane, Wash., Shaylee Gonzales scored 19 points, Sara Hamson blocked two shots in the last minute and BYU (20-6, 11-3 West Coast Conference) ended Gonzaga’s (23-3, 12-2) seven-game winning streak.

NO. 18 IOWA STATE 89, OKLAHOMA STATE 67: In Ames, Iowa, Bridget Carleton scored 24 points and Kristin Scott added 17 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa State. Alexa Middleton had 15 points, and Ashley Joens 14 for the Hawkeyes (19-6, 9-3 Big 12).

Vivian Gray scored 31 points for Oklahoma State (13-11, 4-9).

NO. 25 SOUTH DAKOTA 83, WESTERN ILLINOIS 61: In Macomb, Ill., Hannah Sjerven scored 20 points and South Dakota (23-3, 11-1 Summit League) celebrated its first appearance in the Top 25 with its second 10-game winning streak of the season.

Olivia Kaufmann and Annabel Graettinge­r had 15 points apiece for Western Illinois (12-14, 8-5).

ENMU 71, ANGELO STATE 67: In Portales, Eastern New Mexico roared back from a 12-point third-quarter deficit to knock off NCAA Division II’s No. 17 team. Treyanna Clay’s 23 points led four double-figure scorers for ENMU (18-6, 13-3 Lone Star). Marquita Daniels scored 29 points to pace Angelo State (18-4, 13-3).

WNMU 69, CAMERON 56: In Silver City, El Paso’s Ciara Fields scored 22 points and Destiney Johnson added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Western New Mexico (9-14, 5-11 Lone Star), which kept alive its hopes for the league’s postseason tournament. Cameron fell to 7-17, 4-12.

UC-COLO. SPRINGS 72, NMHU 61: In Colorado Springs, the Cowgirls (4-22, 2-17 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) got 19 points from Terry Amari in a losing effort against the Mountain Lions (13-12, 12-7).
