SPORTS SPEAK UP!

WHY DON’T they pay Paul Weir $20,000 per win instead of a salary of $625,00? That should be enough incentive to win a game or two, so as of today he would have earned $220,000. Then if he wins the MW Tournament give him $25,000 and win games in the NCAA Tournament $50,000 each win. (like that’s going to happen) If another university or college wants him, let him go, no buyout.

I NOTICED the NBA all-star weekend included a slam-dunk competition and skills challenge. Will the WNBA all-star weekend include a layup contest? Maybe a dribbling between cones contest? Don’t want to miss those events.

MARCH IS almost here looking forward to a month of spring training in Phoenix where you can both buy and eat peanuts and sunflower seeds at any of the 14 pro baseball stadiums plus berm seats for as low as $10.

WHAT’S UP with Fresno State player Deshon Taylor shouting at UNM coach Paul Weir? Taylor should have been called for a technical foul. After the game, Weir spoke about tipping his cap to Fresno State for their great play. I wouldn’t think of tipping my cap to that classless team. Steve Alford would have given Taylor an earful, either on the court or certainly during the post-game handshake line. If Alford wants to come back and inject some toughness and excitement into this sinking UNM ship, budget woes or not, Eddie Nuñez should make it so.

WHAT IS a Coach? Some would argue wins and losses. But the truth is the goal of great coaching is to guide, inspire and empower an athlete or team to achieve their full potential. Not mess with 16-year-old psyche. My daughter received a text from her son telling her how a high school coach can ruin a sport that he has loved his entire life: baseball. If you tell a player something stand by it or get out of the business.
