Dems’ reckless agenda leaves NM in dust

Tax hikes, unworkable health care systems won’t gain traction here

- BY STEVE PEARCE CHAIRMAN, NEW MEXICO REPUBLICAN PARTY

Last week, New Mexicans who tuned into the marathon, two-night Democrat debate got a front-row seat to see just how out of touch today’s Democrat party has become. As the 20 candidates duked it out in hopes of standing out from the crowd and generating a viral sound bite, their embrace of radical policies was on full display.

The 20-plus Democrat contenders have all endorsed an agenda too extreme and reckless for New Mexico. On a variety of issues — including health care, climate change, immigration, late-term abortion, the economy and more — today’s Democrat Party has gone completely off the rails by favoring big government while limiting choices for individuals and families.

Many of the Democrats have embraced “Medicare-for-all,” which would completely limit our health care decisions. The government-run program has served as nothing more than a litmus test for 2020 contenders to prove how “progressive” they are.

The more choices that New Mexicans have regarding health care, the better off they’ll be. New Mexico doesn’t need tax hikes, longer wait times and the low-quality care that comes along with socialized medicine. Not to mention, over 700,000 New Mexicans would be stripped of their employer-based health insurance if Democrats take over health care. Leave it to Bernie Sanders and his Democrat caucus to think the federal government should have more say over individuals’ health care decisions than the individuals themselves.

Remember President Obama’s famous line, “if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor?” Well, it was not true then and it really won’t be true if Democrats win the White House in 2020.

In addition to low-quality care and limited choices, the Democrats’ health care plan comes at a huge cost of over $32 trillion dollars. Yes, that’s trillion with a “T.” Experts agree that it would cause a massive upheaval to our economy and current health care system.

But 2020 Democrats are not satisfied simply proposing ridiculous policies. They are determined to attack President Trump’s approach to health care and his roaring economy, promising to reverse the unprecedented progress we’ve made under the Trump administration.

Nationally, the unemployment rate is at its lowest point in 50 years. Here in New Mexico, we’re seeing unemployment rates lower than they’ve been in over 10 years. Wages are finally growing — we’ve seen the 10th-straight month of wage growth of at least 3 percent. And since President Trump took office, he’s helped create over 6 million new jobs! Yet 2020 Democrats want to undo this historic success by repealing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act while increasing taxes on the working class.

It’s clear that the days of your grandfather’s Democrat Party are long gone. Now, the left has fully embraced a socialist agenda that would be disastrous for New Mexico and our nation.

Democrats won’t win over New Mexicans by campaigning on tax hikes and unworkable health care systems.

As the Democrats’ platform races to the left, they are leaving New Mexicans in the rearview mirror.
