Thompson has surgery to repair ACL

76ers, Simmons working on a five-year, $170 million extension

-

Klay Thompson had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee on Tuesday in Los Angeles, a league source confirmed to Bay Area News Group after ESPN first reported the news.

Thompson injured his knee nearly three weeks ago in the Warriors’ decisive Game 6 loss of the NBA Finals to the Toronto Raptors, but he waited to have surgery to allow the swelling to subside.

Thompson is expected have what one source called “a standard recovery timetable” on an ACL injury, which usually lasts anywhere between six to nine months. According to that timeline, Thompson could return anywhere between mid-December and late March next season.

The Warriors are optimistic about Thompson’s recovery. That explains why the Warriors agreed with Thompson on a five-year, $190 million max deal.

… A person with knowledge of the details says the Golden State Warriors are adding Willie Cauley-Stein and Glenn Robinson III, along with re-signing center Kevon Looney.

76ERS: Ben Simmons is apparently about to become the next recipient of a big commitment from the Philadelphia 76ers.

The All-Star point guard and the 76ers are negotiating a $170 million, five-year extension, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because neither the team nor Simmons revealed any details publicly.

ESPN first reported the negotiations between Simmons and the 76ers. The deal will begin in the 2020-21 season.

It’s already been an offseason of big financial commitments for Philadelphia, which will sign Tobias Harris to a $180 million, five-year deal and add Al Horford on a four-year deal that could reach $109 million. Those deals cannot be finalized until the league’s moratorium ends Saturday.

CELTICS: A Boston Celtics assistant coach has been sentenced to probation and ordered to pay a fine for accepting $300,000 in bribes to get a wealthy Florida businessman’s son into the University of Pennsylvania.

Court records show a federal judge imposed the sentence Monday on Jerome Allen, the former head basketball coach at Penn. In addition to four years’ probation, the 47-year-old Allen must pay a $202,000 fine and forfeit another $18,000. LAKERS: Veteran forward Jared Dudley has agreed to a one-year deal with the team. The 33-year-old Dudley will be joining his seventh franchise for his 13rd NBA season.
