Former jailer gets prison for sex with inmate
Ex-MDC officer sentenced to 3 years
A correctional officer who admitted having sex with an inmate at the West Side jail last year will now spend a fair amount of time inside a cell.
Last week, a judge sentenced former Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center officer Johnny Reveles, 22, to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to criminal sexual penetration in the Aug. 20 incident. In New Mexico, sex between an inmate and a correctional officer is considered rape.
At the time, Reveles had worked as a correctional officer just under a year and was fired within days of the assault.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, the inmate reported the rape during a hearing in state District Court later that day, and Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies opened an investigation.
The inmate told deputies that Reveles went to her cell around 1 a.m. and “told her she had left something in the shower.”
Deputies say the inmate went with Reveles, believing maybe it was drugs because “she knows sometimes the (corrections officer) will smuggle the inmates narcotics.”
The inmate told deputies that Reveles “encouraged” her into a closet, near the showers, and the two had sex.
Deputies say surveillance tapes show Reveles and the inmate going into the closet for “approximately five minutes.”
During questioning, Reveles told deputies the sex was consensual.
“I asked (Reveles) if relations between a corrections officer and inmate could be consensual and he stated it could not,” a deputy wrote in the complaint.
