Charges were bird poop, QB insisted

- JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRES

Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts had charges of misdemeanor cocaine possession dropped Thursday, one week after he argued with police officers over a white substance on his vehicle they said tested positive as cocaine. Werts contended it was “bird poop,” USA Today reported. Georgia Southern athletic director Tom Kleinlein lifted Werts’ two-day suspension on Friday.

Saluda County (S.C.) Deputy Solicitor Al Eargle told The Savannah Morning News that the substance confiscated could not be proven to be cocaine.

The initial Saluda County Sheriff’s Office report said a white powdery substance was collected from the hood of the car that was pulled over for speeding July 31. Two field tests of the substance returned positive for cocaine, according the police report. But subsequent tests by South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) tests revealed no controlled substance on those samples.

GSU opens Aug. 31 at LSU and hosts New Mexico State on Oct. 26 in Statesboro.

CLEMSON: Coach Dabo Swinney said Thursday that he loves former quarterback Kelly Bryant. But that doesn’t mean the current Missouri QB is going to get a ring for his part in the Tigers’ 2018 national championship.

Bryant started the first four games of the season for Clemson in 2018 before losing his starting job to Trevor Lawrence, who started the final 11 games.

“There’s nothing else to comment on. What do you want me to say?” Swinney said after Thursday’s workout. “I mean, he wasn’t on the team. It’s as simple as that. We played 11 games after he left.”

OKLAHOMA: Defensive back Tre Norwood is out for the season with an undisclosed injury. He started all 14 games last season and was the projected starter at nickel back this season.
