Our nation’s future is at stake: Impeach Donald Trump

President’s actions show he believes he’s above the law

- BY HERBERT J. HOFFMAN ALBUQUERQUE RESIDENT

The danger signs are blinking red! President Trump is proving himself to be above the law and immune to the law of the land by obstructing justice and engaging in numerous coverups, all while avoiding oversight. Daily, Trump demonstrates his disregard for the Constitution and judicial precedent and pursues being a “unitary executive” by means of peddling the nonlegal concept of “absolute immunity.” Neither Congress, the judiciary or Trump’s own team have found a way to intervene and stop Trump’s destruction of the nation and the laws under which it is governed.

The latest (offense) Trump has committed (was trying to stop the release) of the “whistleblower’s” complaint to the Intelligence Agency’s Inspector General, a complaint that screams its urgency to be addressed for national security reasons. He defies not only Article One congressional oversight of the presidency, he thumbs his nose at the concept of checks and balances in the Constitution.

Through Trump’s direction, environmental standards are being corrupted, humane standards at the border are being compromised, the infrastructure of the United States is deteriorating, and our foreign policy is leading to a lack of trust and respect by other sovereign nations.

The Democrats and their leadership have demonstrated a lack of courage by not, until just recently, declaring, unambiguously, an impeachment investigation. The Republicans are in lockstep with anything the president desires. Given the above, the country and the principles on which it stands are damned.

If impeachment is not actively pursued and the 25th Amendment is not going to be considered by the Cabinet, the consequences may be severe, insurmountable and irreversible.

Consider this scenario: President Trump over the next 15 months solidifies his position as the “unitary executive” — read: dictator — and he loses the election. He than chooses to remain in the White House and does not recognize the results of the election. Who or what is in a position to remove him? Congress has been neutered, the courts have no enforcement power, and who can say how the Secret Service and the military might be co-opted by Trump? In any event who would be in a position of power to give an order for removal? I do not have the answer, do you?

We are currently in a constitutional crisis. If the above scenario plays out, it may be too late to resolve such a crisis peacefully.

Now is time to assertively move on impeachment. Each day that passes, there is further erosion of the Constitution and the pillars on which this nation stands. Impeach!
