APS bond, mill levy critical for our kids
I’m a strong supporter of the Albuquerque Public Schools mission to educate our children. That’s why I’m urging everyone I know to vote yes for the APS bond and mill levy package on Nov. 5.
As a primary care provider, I have treated children and families in Albuquerque for more than 20 years. I’m all too familiar with the health impacts of socio-economic, racial and ethnic disparities.
APS facilities, at an average age of 47 years, are badly in need of basic repairs that are critical to the health and safety of K-12 students, teachers and staff.
These includes things like removing lead from water pipes to ensure safe drinking water and maintaining and improving heating and cooling systems. Making these very basic repairs ensures a healthier environment for kids to learn.
Our children spend the better part of their days during the school year in schools and classrooms. As parents, grandparents and guardians we try to make homes inviting, safe and healthy for kids. We should work to do the same in our schools.
Every child deserves to go to school in a building that will not endanger them or make them sick. I’ve taken a close look at the pared-down APS funding package, and it is clear that revenue will be used to remove lead in pipes, upgrade electrical wiring, fix leaky roofs and maintain heating and cooling systems.
At the same time, it will make APS buildings compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, via improvements such as wheelchair ramps and accessible bathrooms and (it will) enhance school security and safety at every school in the district. Aging schools will get the renovations they need to better serve students, and none of this money will go to central office administrative salaries. These basic repairs and necessary improvements can’t be made without public investments from our community. That’s why I’m a strong supporter of the APS bond and mill levy package.
The mill levy would continue an existing property tax levy of $2 for each $1,000 of net taxable property value for six years. And the $100 million general obligation bond replaces an expiring bond. Neither of these proposals will increase tax rates.
APS is committed to keeping our kids safe and healthy, and our kids and educators deserve our support. Watch for this on your ballot — it will be close to the bottom — when you vote early or on Election Day, Nov. 5. I urge you to vote YES!
