Valle de Oro named an Urban Night Sky Place, first in the world

Cities are often plagued by incessant noise and air pollution. At night, thousands of lights come on, making it nearly impossible to see the stars.

Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge has been recognized for its work to reduce artificial light pollution and create an inviting urban oasis for nocturnal animals and stargazing.

The refuge opened in 2012 as the first of its kind in the Southwest. Now the wetlands habitat in the far South Valley has officially been designated as an Urban Night Sky Place, the first in the world.

Valle de Oro has worked for more than three years to earn the designation, which is awarded by the International Dark Sky Association.

“The key is to light only when and where you need it,” said refuge manager Jennifer Owen

White. “We want people and wildlife to enjoy the refuge, and keeping it dark when needed minimizes any harm to wildlife while allowing people to learn about the night sky and its wonders.”

Valle de Oro hosted a stargazing event on Friday with the Albuquerque Astronomical Society to celebrate the designation.

To receive the special title, refuge staff installed warm white or yellow lights to reduce unnatural blue light that would deter nocturnal animals. They also installed motion sensors and shields on light fixtures.

The refuge will use the same lighting methods at its visitors center, which should be completed at the end of next year. Staff will also be responsible for teaching visitors about the importance of dark night skies and coexisting with wildlife day and night.
