Prostate cancer event covers research, treatment
NM Cancer Center CEO notes that patients ‘have a lot at stake’
Prostate cancer will affect about one in seven men during their lifetimes.
This year’s annual free conference hosted by the Prostate Cancer Support Association of New Mexico (PCSANM) will examine ongoing research and results about this disease.
The conference, the Albuquerque-based group’s eighth annual event, will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at Sandia Preparatory School, 532 Osuna Rd. NE. It will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. Although not required, online registration is available at www.pcsanm.org.
“This year’s collection of topics illustrates the rigorous ongoing research aimed at prostate cancer and then treating it as effectively as possible,” said Steve Denning, chair of the support group’s board.
Opening the conference is Dr. Barbara McAneny (www. barbaramcaneny.com), immediate-past president of the American Medical Association and Chief Executive Officer of the New Mexico Cancer Center in Albuquerque. Her talk is titled “Cancer Care in the Current Health Ecosystem.”
“Patients with prostate cancer,” she said, “have a lot at stake in the changes ahead in medicine. Physician leaders must work collaboratively and with great purpose to make the delivery of care more affordable, efficient and effective, and to make health care accessible for all who need it.
“We now cure many people with cancer. So much of medicine can be just maintenance, but with cancer we have made great advances. There is no better feeling than telling one of your cancer patients that he or she is free of cancer. And that may be the silver lining to cancer — you learn what is important in life.”
Dr. Mark Moyad (www.pcri.org/mark-moyad) of the University of Michigan and the Prostate Cancer Research Center, Culver City, California, will speak about diet and dietary supplements, what works and what doesn’t.
Dr. Moyad, author of several books about dietary and nutritional supplements as they relate to prostate cancer, is the only physician in the United States who has an endowed position to study vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements.
Dr. Moyad said, “We’re going to cover aspirin to multivitamins to statins to vaccines and vitamin D to zinc and more. We also will review some of the most popular and unpopular diets out there. And we will review the latest and greatest research on the most amazing drug ever invented in human history. Exercise.”
Other speakers and their topics:
Dr. Gregg Franklin, New Mexico Cancer Center, will cover emerging information about clinical trials focused on new drugs to treat advanced prostate cancer.
Dr. Amyn Alidina, New Mexico Cancer Center, will talk about the benefits of developments with drugs, scans and new applications of existing medical technology to treat patients with advanced prostate cancer.
Dr. Mark Depper, X-Ray Associates of New Mexico, will report on advances in scanning techniques used to provide better pictures of where cancer may have spread throughout the body.
Dr. Andrew Grollman, Lovelace Medical Group, will cover new diagnostic tools and treatments for initial stages of prostate cancer.
