PNM gives $150,000 for STEAM learning
Seventeen New Mexico nonprofits are now able to expand Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, or STEAM, learning for students across the state after receiving more than $150,000 in grants from the PNM Resources Foundation.
Each nonprofit grant recipient demonstrated educational efforts in building vibrant communities throughout New Mexico and received between $5,000 and $15,000 for programs supporting STEAM education.
“Our commitment to moving the state forward is more than providing electricity,” said Wayne Frye, PNM Resources Foundation board president. “It also means shining a light on our youth and providing them with learning tools today that will help New Mexico’s future.”
PNM has been serving and investing in New Mexico’s communities for more than 100 years and focuses on three main areas to help improve the state’s communities - education, economic vitality, and environmental stewardship.
The 2019 PNM Power Up education grant winners are:
ALAMOGORDO: Imagination Library of Otero County received a $10,000 grant to be used for purchasing books for over 1,500 children registered in Dolly Partons Imagination Library Program.
NMSU Foundation received a $5,000 grant to fund a STEM summer camp for middle school students in Alamogordo.
ALBUQUERQUE: Albuquerque Public Library Foundation received a $6,000 grant to fund after school STEM based classes and programs.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico received a $10,000 grant to fund a Do It Yourself STEM program at five locations. Explora Science Center & Children’s Museum received a $5,000 grant to fund bringing hands on STEAM education to families in rural and tribal communities throughout New Mexico.
Girl Scouts of New Mexico
Trails, Inc. received a $5,000 grant to fund bringing Girls in Robotics Leadership (GIRL) to girls’ grades 4 to 8 in underserved areas.
Hawks Aloft, Inc. received a $10,000 grant to fund delivering Living with the Landscape to Title 1 elementary schools in Albuquerque.
Native American Community Academy Foundation received a $7,500 grant to fund a summer math program for middle school students using youcubed.org’s proven curriculum.
BELEN: H2 Academic Solutions Scholarship Fund received a $7,500 grant to fund a 5-week STEAM summer camp for Valencia County middle school students.
DEMING: Asombro Institute for Science Education received a $10,400 grant to fund 5th grade science can teach interns younger training students so they at their school.
LAS VEGAS: NMSU Foundation received a $10,000 grant to fund the expansion of its successful K-12 STEM education program by adding renewable energy curriculum.
PLACITAS: AAUW Tech Trek New Mexico received a $10,000 grant to fund a week-long summer STEM camp for rising 8th grade girls.
RIO RANCHO: St. Felix Pantry received a $5,000 grant to fund educational services to many who are lacking basic computer skills.
SANTA FE: Girls Inc. of Santa Fe received a $10,000 grant to fund expansion of the successful Operation SMART to an additional 150 girls. National Dance Institute of New Mexico received a $10,000 grant to fund Access to Excellence which provides a 30 week in-school outreach program to 755 3rd - 5th graders.
Pueblo of Tesuque received a $15,000 grant to fund the Tewa STEM program to K-12 students in Tesuque and Santa Fe.
SILVER CITY: Aldo Leopold Charter School Foundation, Inc. received a $9,265 grant to fund a Mobile STREAM Lab for middle school students in Silver City.
TULAROSA: First Robotics NM Inc. received a $5,000 grant to fund the implementation of Demonstration Focused STEM in Tularosa. PNM and the PNM Resources Foundation have awarded more than $23 million in the past six years to nonprofit organizations.
