Hard look shows Trump is lacking more than manners

-

I WOULD like to respond to the (Feb. 3) letter from (Tom) Childress titled “Trump’s results are what count.”

I certainly agree with the first two paragraphs of Childress’ letter. Trump is an “egomaniac” who is “childish, churlish, and crude.” However, I think we should take a second look at Trump’s socalled “accomplishments.”

Illegal border crossings had (been trending downward) before Trump became president. In fact, we had a period of more (Mexican nationals) returning to Mexico than leaving Mexico for the United States. And Trump’s immigration policies were carried out in cruel and dehumanizing ways. Apparently, (some of) Trump’s supporters simply like his xenophobic rhetoric.

An improving economy may be part of the economic cycle. The economy certainly improved under Obama after the Bush recession. However, the economy is definitely not “booming” for large parts of our population.

Our “foreign enemies” have not really not been “kept on their heels,” but, unfortunately, our foreign allies have lost almost all respect for our country’s current leadership and, as a result, seriously wonder about our country’s values.

I won’t go through the entire letter, but I do wonder what the proof is that Trump “loves this country” while President Obama didn’t — although Childress does not use Obama’s name, only referring to him as Trump’s predecessor. My impression is that the only true love of President Trump’s life is himself. And I fear Childress is not bothered by Trump’s character, only his manners.
