Ticket sales: UNM athletics 2019-20

- — Geoff Grammer

After years of consistently missing the mark — some years by significant percentages — UNM had started in the past couple years to rein in the revenue projections coming from ticket sales for its sporting events.

Still, there will be a shortfall at the gate for Lobos sports this year, and not just from the spring sports that were canceled.

Athletic director Eddie Nuñez says there are still some Lobo Club purchases and transactions that need to be reconciled by the end of the fiscal year on June 30, when the department is bracing for what appears to be about a $150,000 shortfall in ticket sales. The largest chunk of that (roughly $100,000) comes from men’s basketball, which still accounted for about $3.5 million in ticket revenue — compared to all other sports’ combined ticket revenue, including football and women’s basketball, of about $1.3-$1.4 million.

According to the memo expected to be presented to Regents at Tuesday’s Finance and Facilities meeting, here are the ticket revenue figures at the end of Quarter 3 (March 31), with a comment from Nuñez about where he anticipates those numbers to be at the end of the fiscal year:

■ MEN’S

BASKETBALL: Projected $3.6 million; collected by March 31, $3.1 million. “We anticipate that one to be just about $100,000 short (by the end of the fiscal year), but still short, yes,” Nuñez said.

■ FOOTBALL: Projected $955,000; collected by March 31, $860,348. Nuñez said UNM projects that to settle in at $954,040 collected, or $960 short, which is a significant improvement relative to the shortfalls over the past decade or so.

■ WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Projected $400,000; collected by March 31, $358,327. UNM projects that shortfall will drop from $41,673 to somewhere in the mid$30,000 range, Nuñez said. “OTHER”

■ SPORTS:

Projected $47,300; collected by March 31, $29,228. This number likely won’t change much by the end of June with the cancellation of spring sports.
