UNM women’s golf receives honor again

Seventh straight year it gains APR notice by NCAA; men’s golf, men’s hoops, too

For the seventh straight season, the University of New Mexico women’s golf team has been honored with public recognition by the NCAA for having its 2018-19 Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of the NCAA in its sport.

UNM men’s golf and men’s basketball were also honored with the same distinction, men’s golf for the fifth straight time, and for men’s basketball it was honored for the first time since 2014, which was for the 2012-13 academic year.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.

Full APR scores will be released Tuesday. UNM is expected to have every sport reach the 930 threshold established by the NCAA for the multiyear rate. That would mark the 10th straight year that all UNM programs have achieved the 930 benchmark.

Overall, UNM has seen 32 sports recognized by the NCAA for superior APR scores since the first APR Public Recognition announcement in 2006.

UNM women’s golf has been honored eight times, two more than women’s tennis for the most honors at the school.

New Mexico’s three of selections were tied for second in the Mountain West. The three programs honored were just one away from tying the school record for a single year, set three previous times. Colorado State led the Mountain West with four. The Mountain West had 23 programs earn public recognition.
