Three new deans to start at UNM this summer

July 1 will mark a big day for new leadership at colleges at the University of New Mexico.

Three new deans from out-of-state, public universities will start five-year appointments at UNM that day. Two of the hires were announced in recent days and one was announced last month.

Mitzi Montoya will be the dean of the Anderson School of Management. Montoya comes from Washington State University, where she was a professor in the Carson College of Business. During her career, she has been a dean at colleges at Oregon State and Arizona State universities, according to a UNM news release.

“I’m looking forward to partnering with the business community as we continue to advance Anderson,” Montoya said in a prepared statement. Montoya’s contract is for $300,000 per year. On Monday, UNM announced Robert Alexander González as the next dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. González is coming from Texas Tech University, where he is the director of the Architecture Program and TTU’s El Paso Regional Site, according to a UNM news release.

“I am excited about joining the UNM School of Architecture and Planning family,” he said in a statement. “I found the school to be unlike any other program with its diverse faculty and staff dedicated to serving a culturally rich region.”

Gonzàlez is the second Red Raider recently tapped to be a dean at UNM. In April, UNM announced Hansel Burley as the next dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences.

Burley had been the chair of the Educational Psychology and Leadership Department and a professor of educational psychology at Texas Tech.

González and Burley will each make $216,000 per year.

In addition to those three new deans, UNM is currently searching for a dean for the College of Fine Arts.
