UN, NM have vital health work to do as we go forward

- STEPHEN FOX Santa Fe

THANK YOU for providing the venue for many vital ideas to help all New Mexico survive and even thrive as we endure these difficult times.

I have a plan on the United Nations Security Council Agenda this month to create a U.N. Secretary General’s Pandemic Board of Inquiry, focused on the legal aspects of this unprecedented international crisis. Soon, nations will be suing nations in the International Court of Justice, which will need impeccable evidence in order to adjudicate and render their decision.

There are 16 nations with biological weapons — USA, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, Cuba, North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Canada, Japan, Israel, South Africa, Libya, Syria and Germany. Clearly the 177 nations without biological weapons must draw a clear line of demarcation to prevent another pandemic, which could be as devastating to our species as comets were to the dinosaurs, and yes that includes heads of state and royal families.

We know about this in New Mexico, the birthplace of the Thermonuclear Era. If you wish to learn how the USA and the USSR backed down during the Cuban Missile Crisis, read “Myths of August” by Stewart Udall, father of N.M.’s senior U.S. Sen. Tom Udall.

This is what I have advised the Security Council, as well as asking the 8th Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon of Korea to advise the 9th UNSG, Antonio Guterres, former Prime Minister of Portugal. All of the Secretaries General going back to the first, Trygve Lie of Norway in 1946, came from nations that are among the 177.

(In addition,) in the June budget short session, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham must please include in her agenda raising the penalty for child trafficking from a third-degree to a first-degree felony. I have spoken with the speaker of the house, the chairman of the Senate Public Affairs Committee, and the Senate majority leader. State Rep. Elizabeth Thompson will get this done.

I also request she include legislation to create the N.M. Nutrition Council in order further protect New Mexicans’ Health. Earlier, less urgent versions were presented in prior years, beneficent plans that were destroyed by corporate lobbyists.

Please let her know what you think.
