SPORTS SPEAK UP!

I SAW THE story about Rob Robbins, aka the Duke, and his daughter. I remember Rob and the Lobos being so great in the Pit. Ernie and me in the Mezzanine. Mike Roberts proudly announcing 18,018 fans. Top 10 in attendance every year. Great rivals going back so many decades. Coached by legends of historical importance. Epic. Those were the days my friend. We thought they’d never end.

I AM NOT talking about taking a knee, I am talking about the comments (Colin Kaepernick) made that I will not repeat. Read them, they are disgusting and encourage violence. “When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction,” the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback tweeted.“The cries for peace will rain down, and when they do, they will land on deaf ears, because your violence has brought this resistance. We have the right to fight back!”

IN 1967 I WAS privileged to attend a University of Alabama practice preceding the (Jan. 1, 1968) Cotton Bowl in Dallas. One of the striking memories of that day was the number of coaches. One coach would run the drill and an assistant or two would help the small groups of 10-12 players. That was a monumental shift for me. I was a high school player at the time. … Did Bear Bryant know something that Lobo fans don’t know? Good athletes + intensive coaching = Winners. And our “fans” complain that we have too many coaches. My gosh!
