SPORTS SPEAK UP!
GROWING UP (I shot) hoops in the backyard of former UNM basketball player Roman Martinez’s grandparents’ home in Los Alamos. I wasn’t aware then that Mr. Martinez had helped Mexico win a bronze medal at the 1936 Olympics. Less than two miles away, in 1959, Michelle Lujan was born at Los Alamos Medical Center. Little did I know that some 60 plus years later she would be directing my life (and possibly saving it). However, she became a St. Mike’s Horseman and we’re now required to wear a mask while exercising outdoors. Call that a double whammy.

IF YOU GO out of state and return to NM you are supposed to selfquarantine at home for 14 days, and anyone coming into NM is also supposed to self-quarantine for 14 days … no outside contacts, none, zero, nada. Well, I don’t see how you have any collegiate sports schedule when that state mandate is in place — and enforced.

HOW ON EARTH do you practice spitting? What about slapping each other and scratching? Will they use a new bat every time and/or sanitize them after each use? And the poor catcher is going to have to wear a mask under his mask! Will they be 6 feet away from each other in the dugout? The locker room seems a haven for germs. When tagging a player for an out, should you still be 6 feet away? Maybe use a long stick with a glove on the end!

NOW THE Washington Redskins are bowing down to pixie corporate attitudes. Ergo, their name should be the Washington Pixies! That would cover the corporations and those who have nothing else to do but whine about a name that is none of their business.
