Ja’Shon Lowery has competed in football, basketball, and track and field, and has plans to play baseball this upcoming school year at La Cueva High School.

It makes sense that he has been recruited for mulitple positions by the University of New Mexico football program.

Lowery, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound athlete, has committed to play for the Lobos for 2021, he announced via Twitter on Saturday night. He said he’s been recruited as a defensive end, linebacker, and tight end. He’s willing to play any and all.

Initially, Lowery said he had been wanting to play out of state for college football, but UNM gave him the best reason to stay home. He also had an offer to play at New Mexico State.

“They made me feel that UNM was home,” Lowery said during a phone interview on Sunday. “They wanted me out of everybody else, and really made me feel that I was going to be a part of a family.”

UNM football has been busy with regards to recruiting, even during an unprecedented offseason in dealing with the challenges from the coronavirus pandemic.

Lowery is the 16th recruit to commit to the Lobos for the 2021 season, and the fourth commit from New Mexico, joining wide receiver Luke Wysong (5-10, 170 pounds, Cleveland High, Rio Rancho), defensive end Jaden Phillips (6-2, 240, Clovis High) and offensive lineman Larry Luna (6-5, 260, Goddard High, Roswell).

“The UNM staff has done an excellent job of recruiting New Mexico kids,” La Cueva coach Brandon Back said. “It’s always a blessing to see them go after the kids in their own backyard and the kids that deserve to be there.”

Back said Lowery’s basketball skills have translated well to his ability on the football field. Lowery’s length, and long arms help him on offense and defense, Back said.

Lowery said he is excited to play football for La Cueva, even it’s in the spring, as Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered such on Thursday due to the threat of COVID-19.

“I don’t want to play a shortened season,” Lowery said. “But it’s better than not playing at all.”

Lowery had been planning to compete in track and field as a jumper this past spring, but the coronavirus pandemic shut down all sports. This upcoming school year, he wants to play baseball and basketball, but not if they interfere with football.
