Five things you probably didn’t know about ABQ chef Marie Yniguez

- BY ROZANNA M. MARTINEZ

Albuquerque chef Marie Yniguez is known for her many wins and appearances on popular TV shows and competitions, including the Food Network’s “Chopped,” “Diners, Driveins and Dives,” and “Guy’s Grocery Games.”

She has also been commended for her charity work, including providing breakfast and lunch for more than 1,000 school aged children.

The local culinary superstar co-owns and runs Slow Roasted Bocadillos restaurant with her wife, Karla Arvizu. The restaurant prides itself on slowroasting its meats for at least 12 hours for its made-fromscratch offerings. The public can experience its mouthwatering offerings by visiting the restaurant from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday or by ordering online at selflane.com. Bocadillo’s is inside the Wells Fargo Building, 200 Lomas NW, in Downtown Albuquerque.

Yniguez is known for her support of the local community, here are some things you didn’t know about the award-winning chef.

1 Yniguez can bring the house down with her creations yet the one dish she can’t seem to master is ... rice.

2 Known for her amazing work in the kitchen, Yniguez says that at home, it’s her wife who cooks. Yet when she’s in a rush, her quick meal to make is tacos.

3 After hours of working at the restaurant, Yniguez could be found patronizing the places she loves — The Shop (Breakfast & Lunch), M’Tucci’s, High Point Grill, Central Grill, Julian’s Burgers and More.

4 When coming up with new entrees, Yniguez is inspired by seeing new things, learning new styles. She also refers to and records her favorites into the book in her brain.

5 Awards and accolades fill Yniguez’s life. Yet there’s one dish that is her biggest accomplishment. It’s the Duke City Ruben. (The hot sandwich is made with slow-roasted corned beef, housemade kraut, chipotle Thousand Island dressing and melted asadero cheese on light rye bread.)
