Exhibit features artworks on limited-edition skateboard decks

Skateboarding has always had a raw culture attached to it. That’s why Bobby Beals of Kamagraph has teamed up with artists to put their touch on skateboard decks. The “Kamagraph Art Show” celebrates the company’s fourth anniversary, and all the decks are for sale.

“It’s perfect for artists to express themselves,” Beals says. “The limited-edition decks are for skaters who can take them out and show them off.”

The Santa Fe-based skateboard company specializes in limitededition decks, fine art prints, and original works of art.

The company is based on a personal belief in art, beauty, and quality, Beals says.

The show is \hanging at Iconik Coffee Roasters on Lena Street in Santa Fe through the end of October.

The artists showing include Felicia Galbadon, Andrea Peterson, Bear Face, Pilar Valenzuela, Erik Speyer, Cha Maul and Michael Martinez.

Beals says a lot of local artists jumped at the chance for this year’s exhibition, though some artists didn’t want to be affiliated with skateboard deck art.

“We’ve been able to pay the artists during these times. It’s a great way to keep supporting local artists,” Beals says. “Plus, it’s a different medium for artists to work with.”

Beals says artists continue to turn their decks in to be part of the exhibit.

“We always have some new original art coming,” he says. “We’ve been selling the pieces pretty well.”

Beals says the skateboard decks are exciting.

He says it’s an affordable way for an art lover to start collecting.

“The canvas isn’t too large, and people can hang it in their homes,” he says. “(The decks) also remind people of a time that has a certain nostalgia to it. It brings a smile to their face.”

Beals, who has a background as a curator, gallery owner and art consultant, says it’s possible to merge fine art with skateboard decks.

“The results are amazing,” he says. “The pieces are showing up all over. Buyers are running the gamut.”
