No officers injured in confrontation

Albuquerque police shot and killed a man during a SWAT situation at a motel east of Downtown on Friday afternoon, the second fatal shooting by Albuquerque police this week.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said no officers were injured in Friday’s incident.

The shooting occurred at the Imperial Inn Motel on Central NE, just west of Interstate 25.

During a news conference, APD Interim Chief Harold Medina said a firearm was found at the scene, but he would not say if the man fired or pointed it at police before he was shot. Police have not identified the man killed. He said officers responded around 7 a.m. to reports of shots being fired from inside a room at the motel. Officers set up a perimeter before a person approached and told police a man had fired several shots at them.

Medina said the SWAT team responded to the motel

and tried to talk him into surrendering — with no response.

“They were unsuccessful and they tried over 200 times on telephone ... to contact this individual,” he said.

Medina said that around 4 p.m., a man came out of a window and “a confrontation occurred” before at least one officer opened fire. He said the man died at the scene.

He is the eighth person APD officers have shot this year. Six of those shootings have been fatal. On Monday, detectives shot and killed Matthew Montoya hours after Montoya allegedly shot and killed his wife at a strip mall.
