5 sought for setting fires inside Target
Eleven minutes before the Target at Uptown closed Saturday night, investigators say, arsonists used accelerants to set numerous fires inside and outside the store, causing “severe damage.”
Crime Stoppers released security camera footage of five suspects — wearing face masks and winter hats or hooded jackets — and asked the public for help identifying them.
The store remained closed Sunday and Monday.
According to Crime Stoppers, around 9:45 p.m. Jan. 9 the suspects entered the Target on Louisiana and Indian School NE.
“The subjects used accelerant fluids to ignite four fires within the store and one outside causing severe damage,” Crime Stoppers said.
While Crime Stoppers said there were five fires, a Target spokeswoman said in a statement that there were “three small fires.”
“We’re thankful that our team members were able to safely evacuate themselves and all guests from the store,” the spokeswoman said. “The building structure was not damaged, but we’ve closed the store until further notice while we assess the impact to the store and products. We’re working with the Albuquerque Fire Department and will provide any information that may be helpful to their investigation.” The spokeswoman did not disclose a damage estimate or answer questions about how much merchandise was ruined.
Spokespersons from the Albuquerque Police Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue did not answer questions about the incident or provide additional details.
