BIG COOLDOWN

Snow, icy weather expected in Duke City, northern NM

- BY THERESA DAVIS JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A winter storm is bringing snow and cold wind to the northern half of the state, including Albuquerque.

The National Weather Service forecast shows that Tuesday will probably be the coldest day of the week in Albuquerque, with a low of 20 degrees and high of 39.

There is a 70% chance of precipitation in Albuquerque on Tuesday. Snow is likely before noon.

Snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible in the metro area by Tuesday night.

Winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts of 55 to 60 mph, are expected to last through Tuesday afternoon in the Rio Grande Valley.

Albuquerque has issued a health alert for blowing dust on Tuesday. Those with respiratory conditions should limit time outside.

Northern New Mexico will get the most snowfall from the storm.

Los Alamos could receive 5 inches. Angel Fire and Red River are expected to get up to 8inches of snow.

The snow and gusty winds will make for slick highways and difficult driving in northern and central New Mexico. Check nmroads.com for road conditions before venturing out.

The winter weather will take a brief break Wednesday. Albuquerque will be mostly sunny, with a high of 48 degrees.

Rain in the valley and snow in the mountains could return Thursday as a storm moves east across the state.

New Mexico is in desperate need of this week’s snow and rain. More than half of the state is in exceptional drought, a designation marked by drying rivers and parched soil.
