What you need to know about New Mexico: The Lobos continue to lead the MWC in scoring (85.4 ppg) and 3-pointers (10.2 per game), but they hope to regain their perimeter shooting touch after back-toback cold outings against Fresno State. UNM split the series in Canyon, Texas, despite going just 13-for-64 from 3-point range (20.3%) against the Bulldogs’ zone defense. The Lobos did get a scoring boost from forwards McGruder and Anderson in the series, but they rely on guards to keep the offense rolling efficiently. Rebounding will be key for UNM against a San Diego State team that has struggled to score but plays aggressive defense. The Lobos got clobbered on the boards against Fresno State, which largely derailed their transition offense. SDSU has a height advantage over UNM but has not rebounded well (-2.4 per game) this season. Anderson, McGruder and Watts must hold their own on the glass if the Lobos are to set a fast pace.

What you need to know about San Diego State: The Aztecs have struggled of late, and a sputtering offense is largely to blame. SDSU scored just 36 and 41 points in back-to-back losses at Wyoming last week and managed to reach 60 points just once in seven January games. The Aztecs rank 10th in the MWC in scoring (60.2 ppg), ninth in 3-pointers (5.0 per game) and last in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.66). SDSU clearly misses standout guard Sophia Ramos, who has been out since December with a hand injury. The Aztecs have kept games close and been able to grind out a few wins with solid defense. They rank second in the MWC in scoring defense (63.5 ppg allowed), first in 3-point percentage defense (27.9% allowed) and undoubtedly will try to slow the pace against UNM. Guard Jayden Perez, a Las Cruces native, is out for the season with a leg injury. Highland High senior wing Cailee Crawford has signed to play at SDSU next season.
