As implausible as it may sound, the New Mexico State men’s basketball team (6-6, 3-5 WAC) hopes to rally and reach the .500 mark in Western Athletic Conference play as it begins its two-game road series against Tarleton State (7-9, 2-6) on Friday in Stephenville, Texas.

Friday’s game streams online on ESPN+, while Saturday’s contest can be watched on WAC Digital Network. Both games air at 6 p.m. on 99.5 FM in Las Cruces.

New Mexico State, the three-time defending league champion, split its “home” series against Utah Valley last weekend in El Paso, suffering a 69-66 loss in Game 1 before earning a 67-60 win in Game 2.

Jabari Rice showed out for the Aggies. The redshirt junior averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists per game en route to a WAC Player of the Week nomination. Senior point guard Evan Gilyard II averaged 12.5 points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game, with no turnovers.

Still, NMSU’s offense struggled, shooting a combined 43-for-115 from the floor (37.4%), 15-for-52 (28.8%) on 3s.

Tarleton State split its road series against Dixie State last weekend. The Texans are led by Montre Gipson, a 5-foot-11 junior who is averaging team highs of 14.5 points and 2.9 assists per contest while shooting 53.1% from the floor and 51.2% from distance.

Tarleton forces a turnover on 23.3 percent of opponents’ possessions, ranking 35th in the country, so look for the Aggies to score before the Texans can get set up.

Thursday games

No. 22 SAN DIEGO STATE 78, BOISE STATE 66 (OT): In San Diego, Matt Mitchell scored 24 points, including four in overtime, and San Diego State overcame 29 points by Derrick Alston Jr. to beat Boise State for its ninth straight win.

Those games do not count in SDSU’s overall or formal conference record, but will count for seeding and conference championship implications.
