Chanachai sets career birdie mark for Aggies

University of New Mexico softball is being overmatche­d, especially offensivel­y, by stellar competitio­n in early season competitio­n.

Friday in Tempe, Ariz., the Lobos were no-hit by three Oklahoma pitchers in an 8-0, six-inning win for the No. 2 Sooners.

Later, UNM (1-7) lost 13-1 in five innings to host Arizona State (7-0), and managed only one hit, an RBI single by Izabella Owen.

New Mexico also was no-hit by Arizona last Saturday in Tucson, a 12-0, fiveinning decision.

The Lobos play Oklahoma and host Grand Canyon Saturday.

■ At The Spring Games in Clermont,

Fla., No. 12 Kentucky thumped New Mexico State 11-1 in five innings early Friday before the Aggies bounced back and edged Florida Internatio­nal 4-3.

NMSU (2-7) faces both of those teams Saturday, then wraps up the event with a Sunday game vs. Stetson.

Five Aggie errors led to nine Kentucky runs as Felicia De La Torre (1-3) took the loss. NMSU managed three hits, all singles.

BASEBALL: In Abilene, Texas, host Abilene Christian scored six first-inning runs and beat New Mexico State 8-7 Friday night in the Aggies’ delayed season opener. NMSU had COVID issues that prevented its scheduled opener last week at UNLV. Connor Laux had three hits in his debut for the Aggies, Josh Laukkanen took the loss in relief for NMSU, which had fought back to tie the game at 7 in the seventh. The two teams play again Saturday at 2:05 p.m.

■ In Lawton, Okla., Eastern New Mexico split a doublehead­er with Cameron, losing 3-2 in 11 innings before winning 6-5. The rubber game of the set is Saturday

TENNIS: At the El Paso Swim Tennis Club, New Mexico’s Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang lost a third-set tiebreaker, and the Lobo women (4-2) fell 4-3 to UTSA (3-4) in the finale of the four-match road trip.

UNM returns to action March 7 at Northern Arizona and March 8 at Grand Canyon.

GOLF: In Moorpark, Calif., Pun Chanachai set New Mexico State’s career record for birdies with 316 at the 36-hole Moorpark Intercolle­giate. It was the first action of the season for the Aggie women.

Pepperdine posted a 2-under 574 while NMSU finished the day with a 16-over 592. Cal State Fullerton also competed, but its scores weren’t reported.
