Lobo baseball, softball lose in doubleheaders
SAN DIEGO — Host and first-place San Diego State stunned New Mexico (8-13, 6-8) with a six-run bottom of the ninth inning — without recording an out — and beat the Lobos 10-9 Friday in game one of a Mountain West Conference doubleheader at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
In the late game, San Diego State completed the sweep with a 5-4 win in 10 innings.
In the opener, the Aztecs (15-6, 10-4) had seven of their 19 hits in the last inning with a walk in the mix. Terrell Hudson (0-3) took the loss, since his baserunner is the one who scored the game winner. Riely Egoff started the nightmarish ninth, and Bobby Meza was left to finish it. Harry Fullerton and Jarrett Gonzales both had two hits and drove in three runs for UNM.
SOFTBALL: The 2-25 Lobos’ miserable season continued with their fourth time being no-hit Friday. Fresno State pitcher Hailey Dolcini struck out 18 batters over the seven innings, only an error preventing a perfect game, as the Bulldogs beat UNM 6-0 in game one of a doubleheader. In the second game, FSU won 9-1.
SOCCER: At Air Force Academy, Colo., the Lobo women (6-1, 6-1 MW) got goals from senior Alexa Kirton and junior Alesia Garcia in a 2-0 win over Air Force (2-5, 2-5). UNM allowed only seven shots in its fifth shutout in seven games. .
VOLLEYBALL: UNM concludes its regular season with a 1 p.m. match at the Pit vs. Utah State. No fans will be allowed due to pandemic-related public health restrictions. UNM is trying to snap a five-match losing streak, which was extended Thursday in a 3-0 home loss to Colorado State.
