NMHU AT HOME: There will be football in Las Vegas in this spring season after all. New Mexico Highlands University will play a home game — its only contest since the end of 2019 season — April 23 against Fort Lewis. Both local high schools, West Las Vegas or Robertson, opted out of football this spring.

SIGNED: St. Michael’s senior setter Jayla Martinez, who helped the Horsemen reach the state volleyball tournament this week, signed to play at Suffolk University in Boston.

THURSDAY SANTA FE 3, CLEVELAND

0: With a berth in Saturday’s Class 5A state championship game on the line, the host and top-seeded Demonettes (10-1) turned in perhaps their best match of the season, sweeping the Storm 25-19, 25-19, 25-19. Laila Bernardino again powered the versatile offense, with 16 kills. The Demonettes played Centennial in the finale in a match decided after publication deadline. Santa Fe has not won a volleyball state title since 1996, which was the last time it was in the championship match.

WEDNESDAY SANDIA PREP 3, ST.

MICHAEL’S 0: The run through the state tournament by the visiting Horsemen (7-4) ended as the Sundevils had too much firepower.

TUESDAY SANTA FE 3, CLOVIS 1:

Laila Bernardino went wild for the top-seeded Demonettes (9-1), putting up 22 kills in 30 attempts, helping to overwhelm the visiting Wildcats 25-17, 26-24, 25-21, 25-15 in the Class 5A state tournament quarterfinals.

MONDAY ST. MICHAEL’S 3, RATON

0: The sixth-seeded Horsemen (7-3) got 13 kills from Maya Pino and 11 from Alana Overton in a 25-16, 26-24, 25-19 win over the host Tigers, seeded third, in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

SANTA TERESA 3, LOS ALAMOS 2: The visiting Hilltoppers, seeded sixth, got big games from Abigail Lecher and Nadia Gallegos, each of whom had 14 kills, while Solenne Thelliez had 11, Michaela Gonzales nine and Ashley Hammond eight in the Class 4A quarterfinals. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the sixth-seeded Warriors in the tight 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12 decision.

EUNICE 3, MORA 0: The third-seeded Rangerettes put up a struggle in the Class 2A quarterfinals, losing to the Cardinals 25-21, 25-23, 26-24 in match played at neutral Fort Sumner.

THURSDAY ST. MICHAEL’S 1, EAST

MOUNTAIN 0: Oliver Rosales scored a first-half goal that stood up for the visiting Horsemen (3-6, 2-2 District 2 1A-3A) against the Timberwolves.

TAOS 2, LOS ALAMOS 0: Milo Collignon picked up six saves in helping the host Tigers (6-0, 4-0 District 2-4A) blank the Hilltoppers (5-2, 1-2).

MONTE DEL SOL 3, MORIARTY 1: The host Dragons (2-2) looked strong in defeating the much-larger Pintos.

WEDNESDAY CLEVELAND 5, SANTA FE

1: Kiran Smelser scored off an early penalty kick, but the host Demons (3-5 1-4 District 1-5A) could not hold the advantage in losing 5-1 to Cleveland.

TUESDAY

TAOS 10, MORIARTY 0: Ricky Nichols had three goals and two assists, Teva Leshem had three goals and an assist, and Aidan Heflin chipped in a goal and three assists to help the host Tigers (5-0, 3-0 District 2-4A) beat the Pintos in a mercy rule game.

SANTA FE PREP 3, ST. MICHAEL’S 2 OT: Visiting Mike Vimont scored twice for the Blue Griffins (5-3, 4-0 District 2, 1A-3A, but it was an own goal in overtime that led to the victory over the Horsemen (2-6, 1-2), with goals from Aiden Fairchild and Oliver Rosales.

TAOS 2, LOS ALAMOS 1: Ricky Nichols and Ben Hastings each scored to give the visiting Tigers (4-0, 3-0 District 2-4A) the important victory over the Hilltoppers (5-1, 1-1).

MONDAY SANTA FE 3, MONTE DEL

SOL 2, 2 OTS: Jack Joseph scored twice, including the game winner, and Kiran Smelser had a goal and an assist on the winning shot to give the Demons (3-4) the win over the Dragons (1-2), who got goals from Moises Cerda and José Gonzales.

ST. MICHAEL’S 5, EAST MOUNTAIN 0: Olivia Farrah had two goals, with Farrah Baker, Grace Sandoval and Elsa Ranney Smith each adding a goal and assist to lead the Horsemen (6-0-1, 4-0 District 2, 1A-3A) past the Timberwolves and into an automatic berth in next week’s state tournament.

MORIARTY 2, SANTA FE PREP 0: The visiting Blue Griffins (0-3) could not generate any offense against the Pintos.

LOS ALAMOS 4, TAOS 0:

After a scoreless first half, the host Hilltoppers (5-3-1, 3-0 District 2-4A) broke it open with four goals, with Tara McDonald scoring twice and adding an assist against the Tigers (3-3-1, 1-2-1).

REHOBOTH CHRISTIAN 2, ACADEMY FOR TECHNOLOGY AND THE CLASSICS 1:

Although the host Phoenix (2-3, 1-1 District 2, 1A-3A) got a second-half goal, it was not enough to overcome the two first-half scores by the Lynx.

SANTA FE 1, CLEVELAND 0: Midway through the second half, Jazzi Gonzalez scored to give the Demonettes (4-3, 3-2 District 1-5A) an important road win over the Storm.

RIO RANCHO 11, CAPITAL 0: The visiting Jaguars (0-7, 0-4) had no answers for the Rams, who won the game by halftime due to the mercy rule.

TUESDAY RIO RANCHO 5, LOS

ALAMOS 0: The host Hilltoppers (4-3-1) could not get untracked against the Rams.

TAOS 0, MORIATY 0 2 OTS: The visiting Tigers (3-2-1, 1-1-1 in District 2-4A) fended off a number of shots, but could not find themselves against the Pintos.

ACADEMY FOR TECHNOLOGY AND THE CLASSICS 2, SANTA FE PREP 0: The visiting Phoenix (2-2) got first-half goals from Maggie Rittmeter and Graciela Mays to hold off the Blue Griffins (0-2).

FE 31: In three of the four quarters, the Demonettes (0-2, 0-1 District 5-5A) were unable to reach double digits against the Tigers.

ESPAÑOLA VALLEY 50, ROBERTSON 47: Tough defense helped the host Sundevils (1-0) overcome an 11-point, third-quarter deficit against the Cardinals (1-1).

ESCALANTE 52, POJOAQUE VALLEY 30: The visiting Lobos (1-0) got out to a 33-11 halftime lead and were never challenged thereafter by the Elkettes (1-2).

PECOS 75, MCCURDY 10: The host Panthers (1-0) led 51-10 at halftime, then shut out the Bobcats (0-2) in the second half.

BERNALILLO 59, WEST LAS VEGAS 29: The visiting Dons (1-1) could not develop any offensive rhythm against the Spartans.

TUESDAY

POJOAQUE VALLEY 54, PEÑASCO 43: The visiting Elkettes (1-1) led 30-25 at halftime, then the defense limited the Panthers (0-1) to six third-quarter points.

ACADEMY FOR TECHNOLOGY AND THE CLASSICS 39, MCCURDY 21: Perla Miramontes scored 18 points and the visiting Phoenix (1-0) threw a defensive blanket atop the Bobcats (0-1).

CAPITAL 72, RIO GRANDE 4: Rebecca Sorensen had 21 points and Ethena Silva 13 for the host Jaguars (1-0), who chucked shutout quarters in all but the second.

PECOS 74, MCCURDY 60: The running and gunning host Panthers (1-0) did just that early, bouncing out to a 25-8 lead, then held on for the win over the Bobcats (1-1).

LAS VEGAS 61: The host Horsemen (1-0, 1-0 District 2-3A) outscored the Dons (0-2, 0-1) 19-8 in the second quarter, then held off a late run.

LOS ALAMOS 63, VALENCIA 44: The host Hilltoppers (1-0) held a 24-19 halftime lead before outscoring the Jaguars 21-5 in the third quarter.

TUESDAY SANTA FE 59, ALBUQUERQUE HIGH 44:

Cruz Martinez and Cody Garcia each scored 19 points to lead the visiting Demons (2-0, 1-0 District 5-5A) past the Bulldogs.

MCCURDY 47, ACADEMY FOR TECHNOLOGY AND THE CLASSICS 43: The Bobcats (1-1) led 21-15 at halftime, then staved off a second-half run from the Phoenix (0-1).

ESPAÑOLA VALLEY 56, POJOAQUE VALLEY 46:

Garret May and Jordan Duda each scored 11 points to lead the Sundevils (1-1) past the Elkettes (0-2).

TAOS 70, BERNALILLO 67:

Anthony Padilla scored 24 points, Edgar Varela 16 and Josiah Duke 15 for the visiting Tigers (2-0) in beating the Spartans.
