Albuquerque Public Schools spokeswoman Monica Armenta provides advice for parents and students on how to get ready for a return to in-person instruction.

Today is a first day of school like no other.

Shuttered for more than a year, Albuquerque Public Schools is opening their doors to in-person learning for the first time since the onset of the pandemic. Thousands of students across the district will be returning to the classroom.

Monica Armenta, an APS spokeswoman, said there will be plenty of changes, new rules and requirements. So here are five tips for the first day.

Arrive early

School officials are encouraging parents who can to drop off their children at school instead of using the bus system. Heavy traffic and delays in school zones are expected. Police will be directing traffic in certain places.

Wear a proper mask

Masks must be worn by all students and school personnel for the entire day, except during lunch. That rule applies to everyone, including people who have been fully vaccinated. And it must be a proper mask. Neck gaiters, buffs, plastic face shields and bandannas don’t count. Schools will have plenty of masks on hand if someone loses or forgets theirs.

Charge the laptop

Even for students returning to in-person learning, class work is staying in virtual mode. Students will need to use their computers during class.

Bring a water bottle

Drinking fountains have been turned off. Students are advised to take their own water bottle with a lid. There will be refilling stations. And perhaps put the bottle in a plastic bag so it doesn’t spill on the laptop.

Check the weather

To increase ventilation, schools plan to leave the doors and windows open throughout the day. That means students should check the weather and dress appropriately in layers.
